George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of June 19th, 2006:

  • MONDAY, JUNE 19: Yesterday was Father’s Day and history books show that the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. Also yesterday, Fred and Elaine Kline of Boonville celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary, according to grandson Riley. The 300-foot-tall Statue of Liberty arrived in New York harbor in 1885 from the people of France. Our favorite comic strip cat, “Garfield,” is 28 years old today and still loves lasagna. Baseball legend Lou Gehrig was born in New York in 1903. He played in seven World Series and died in New York in 1941 of a degenerative muscle disease that was named after him. Spanky MacFarlane, lead singer of the ’60’s pop group, “Spanky and Our Gang,” is 64 and the group is best remembered for their hit, “Sunday Will Never Be The Same.” It was yesterday’s date in 1932 when a leak developed in the Black River Feeder Canal, behind the swimming pool, which carved out a crater 75 feet deep. You can still see the ravine from lower East Schuyler Street in Boonville.

  • TUESDAY, JUNE 20: Congratulations to Boonville barber Mike Maggliolino and Tina Moshier on the birth of a daughter last evening, with best wishes from her mom. A name has not yet been selected. Also, congratulations to Matt and Tammy Rozanski of Boonville on the birth of Allison Nicole on Friday, with best wishes from all the family. Happy 15th birthdays to twins, Jennifer and Elizabeth Austin, from their family. Canadian singer Anne Murray was born in Nova Scotia, Canada, 61 years ago. She has appeared at Turning Stone Casino several times. Pop singer-songwriter Brian Wilson is 64. He is a native of Hawthorne, California, and is one of the original “Beach Boys.” The trans-Alaska pipeline began operation today in 1977. The 48-inch, 800-mile long pipeline carries about 800,000 barrels of crude oil each day, and has moved 14 billion barrels in its lifetime. In all my years of reporting weather, this morning’s low temperature of 59 degrees was the same at six of the seven reporting locations, which is quite unusual.

  • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21: Happy 54th wedding anniversary to Bob and Elma Freeman of the Spencer Road in Boonville, from their children and grandchildren. It was today in 1953 when the weather station in Boonville recorded 90 degrees for the hottest temperature up to that time. Higher temperatures have been recorded in later years. The new flagpole was placed in the Little Village Park this morning in 2002 by the Boonville Municipal Commission Electric Department. It was in 1948 when Columbia Records offered to the public a 33-1/3 long playing record. There still are a few albums being produced, but are hard to locate. Country singer Kathy Mattea was born in Cross Lanes, West Virginia, 47 years ago. Her biggest hit has been, “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses,” a number one song in 1988. Actor Bernie Koppel, from the “Love Boat” TV series, was born in New York, NY, 73 years ago.

  • THURSDAY, JUNE 22: Alvin and Helen Weiler of West Leyden celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary, with best wishes from Chris. Rick Beyer, our weather watcher on the Rector Road, reports that a film crew from TV’s “History Channel,” has been recording a documentary on the construction of the wind turbines on Tug Hill. When we find out the date and time of this program, we will broadcast this information. In 1970, President Nixon signed into law, lowering the voting age to 18. Yesterday, a motorcyclist was struck by lightning in rush hour traffic in Westminster, Colorado, located between Denver and Boulder, and also damaged the U.S. Route 36, which had to be closed for two hours.

  • FRIDAY, JUNE 23: Congratulations to Paul and Rebekah Ashman of Potsdam on the birth of a daughter, Julia Mae, born Wednesday evening. Rebekah is the daughter of Pastor Bill and Shari Mudge of Boonville. In Boonville weather history, nearly 20 cellars had to be pumped out in 1987 after 5.5 inches of rain was measured at the Waste Water Treatment Plant. Here at the radio station, 4.80 inches was found in our rain gauge. The late Johnny Cash’s wife, June Carter Cash, was born in Maces Springs, Virginia, in 1929, and died May 15, 2003.
