George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of June 16th, 2008:
- MONDAY, JUNE 16: Father’s Day
weather was perfect. Son Dan, his wife Susan, Laurie and I traveled to
Tupper Lake to check out the new museum. The Wild Center is where the
wild world of the Adirondacks opens before your eyes. It was designed by
the same company that designed the Air and Space Museum in Washington.
From Boonville, it’s a two-hour drive. Check their website at
wildcenter.org. Last year on Father’s Day we spent the day at the Blue
Mountain Lake Museum. The two places are Adirondack treasures. We ended
the day with a delicious meal at the restored Wood Inn at Inlet.
Congratulations to Brandy Hoffert and Matt Johnson who were married in
Buffalo on Saturday. Best wishes from Mom and Dad Hoffert in
Constableville.
- TUESDAY, JUNE 17: Congratulations
to Jason and Chrissy Earl of Lyons Falls on the birth early this morning
of a son, Zachery Allen Earl. He arrived weighing 8 pound, 1-3/4 ounces,
and was 21 inches long, with happy wishes from their families. Birthday
wishes to Fran Lenart of Alder Creek. Her daughter Diane and Ted says
she’s a young 75. Welcome home to Ken Walters of Boonville who returned
from Iraq yesterday. Wife Donna drove to Rhode Island yesterday to bring
him home.
- WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18:
Congratulations to Bruce Cobb Jr. and Destiny Hunkins of Port Leyden on
the birth last evening of a son, Brice Deforest Cobb. Happy wishes from
Dad and Mom Cobb. Happy anniversary to Fred and Elaine Kline who
celebrate their 48th today, from grandson Riley. Singer-songwriter and
former Beatle, Paul McCartney, was born in Liverpool, England, 66 years
ago today. In Boonville history, a leak in the bank of the Black River
Feeder Canal in 1932 at 10 p.m. carved a crater 35 feet deep, draining
the canal. In 1990, a storm cloud surrounded the village with heavy
rain. It was so dark that the street lights turned on at 10:25 a.m.
- THURSDAY, JUNE 19: Five days in a
row we’ve received measurable rain. The positive effects have kept
everything green, eliminating the need to water our gardens and flower
beds, but it has been tough on house painters and roofers. In 1949,
NASCAR held its first Grand National Event. Baseball legend Lou Gehrig
was born today in New York in 1903. He played in seven World Series and
died in New York on June 2, 1941. Garfield, the comic strip lasagna
loving cat, is 30 today. Spanky McFarlane of the 60’s group, “Spanky and
Our Gang,” is 66 today. After the breakup of the group, she toured for
several years with the Mamas and Papas. She was born in Peoria,
Illinois.
- FRIDAY, JUNE 20: A full moon on
Wednesday signaled the arrival of many babies, and I had two reported.
First, congratulations to Tom and Jennifer Kratzenburg of Boonville on
the birth yesterday morning of a son, Luke Thomas, who will join his big
brother Wyatt at home. Also, Pete and Megan Gillander of Kayuta Lake are
now parents of a daughter, Alesaka Ann, born late yesterday afternoon.
Congratulations to both couples. Tomorrow, John Longway and Jolene
Kerfin will be married at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Boonville,
with best wishes from their families. The Steven Spielberg classic
movie, “Jaws,” opened in theaters today in 1975. In 2006, all seven
reporting areas registered a 59-degree morning temperature. That was the
only time since I’ve kept records that they all matched.
