following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of June 12th, 2006:
- MONDAY, JUNE 12: Our longtime
newsman, Brian Best, is on vacation this week from the radio station.
When he goes on vacation the weather warms up, and when I go on vacation
it cools down and snows! Rest up Brian! You always get the good stuff.
Two well-known young ladies in Boonville celebrate their birthdays
today. Carol Ingersoll is 84 and Louise Zeigler is 79, with best wishes
from their families and friends. Former President George H. Bush is 82.
He was born in Milton, MA. Actor singer Jim Nabors, “Gomer Pyle,” was
born in Sylacauga, Alabama, 76 years ago. It was this day in 1939 when
the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown was dedicated. Country
singer Johnny Bond, whose classic song “Ten Little Bottles” brought him
fame, died in Burbank, California, in 1978 at the age of 63. The paving
project on Potato Hill looks like it’s nearing completion. I don’t think
I’ve ever seen the hill that smooth.
- TUESDAY, JUNE 13: Malcolm and
Joanne Kellogg of Lowville celebrate their 42nd anniversary today, with
best wishes from their family. This morning two full-size deer walked
into the middle of the road in front of the radio station here on Route
12D. An estimated 350-pound black bear was struck and killed on Route 12
this morning near the V.S. Virkler Concrete Plant halfway between
Boonville and Alder Creek. That’s the third bear to be hit in that area.
The Summit Street paving project started this morning in Boonville after
a year of preparation. One time star of “The Waltons” TV series, Richard
Thomas, was born in New York City, 55 years ago. Country singer Randy
Travis had the #1 country song in 1987, with “Forever and Ever, Amen,”
and stayed there for three weeks.
- WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14: It was in
1777 when Congress adopted the stars and stripes on our country’s flag,
and on the 100th anniversary, the first Flag Day observance was held. in
1949, Congress officially designated June 14 as Flag Day, a national day
of observance. The world’s first commercial computer, the Univac 1,
designed for the Census Bureau, was demonstrated today in 1951 in
Philadelphia, PA. Country singer John Anderson received a gold record
today in 1983 for his huge hit, “Swingin.” Singer-actor Burl Ives was
born in Newton, Illinois, in 1909. He died of cancer on April 14, 1995,
at the age of 85. His voice could be heard on several Christmas cartoons
in the ’60s. Speed skater and Olympic gold medalist winner in the Lake
Placid Olympics, Eric Heiden, was born in Madison, Wisconsin, 48 years
ago.
- THURSDAY, JUNE 15:
Congratulations to Shandi and Adam Juby of Lowville on the birth last
evening of a son, Jake Miles, with best wishes from her mom and family.
Robert and Marie Burnham of Glenfield celebrate their 60th anniversary
today, with best wishes from their family. Florence Farr of the
Fowlerville Road in Port Leyden will celebrate her 80th birthday, from
her family and friends. Comedian-actor Jim Belushi was born in Chicago
52 years ago. Longtime baseball player Wade Boggs, a native of Omaha,
Nebraska, is 48 today. Former NY governor, Mario Cuomo, from Queens, NY,
is 74 today. Former country music legend, Waylon Jennings, was born
today in Littlefield, Texas, in 1937, and died of diabetes on February
13, 2002. His son Shooter is now starting his own music career.
- FRIDAY, JUNE 16: The “Beatles”
recorded “When I’m 64” on an album in 1967. On Sunday, June 18, Paul
McCartney who wrote the song, will be 64. Paul was born in Liverpool,
England, in 1942. Country singer Billy “Crash” Craddock was born in
Greensboro, North Carolina, 67 years ago. He is best remembered for two
#1 songs in 1974, “Rub It In” and “Ruby Baby.” He’s had over 40 songs on
the charts in a long career. In 1983 on this afternoon’s date,
hailstones the size of mothballs were reported in Lowville and
Glenfield, but no damage was reported.
