following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of June 5th, 2006:
- MONDAY, JUNE 5: I finally
finished planting the vegetable garden yesterday and with three days of
sun in the forecast, seeds should soon sprout. Happy birthday to Jenny
Turpin of Deferiet on her 90th birthday today with best wishes from
friend Eilleen. The Boonville Project Playground Committee made their
drawing for a brand-new Kawasaki 4-wheeler on Saturday, and it was won
by Judy Spann of Port Leyden. This fund-raiser was to raise money to
replace old and broken playground equipment in Erwin Park. The 40th
President of the U.S., Ronald Reagan, died at the age of 93 in Los
Angeles in 2004 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Country
singer Toby Keith’s first record, “I Should Have Been A Cowboy” was
America’s #1 song on the country charts in 1993. Conway Twitty died near
Branson, Missouri, in 1993 at the age of 59 of an abdominal aneurysm.
- TUESDAY, JUNE 6: Happy 52nd
wedding anniversary wishes to Kenneth Cyr of Boonville, “The Apple Man,”
from wife Helenjane. An earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale
was felt at 9:16 a.m. in 1980 with many reports from the Moose River
Road, but no damage reported. World War II veterans will remember this
day as “D-Day” when Allied Forces landed on Normandy Beach in 1944.
’60’s Pop singer, Gary U.S. Bonds, of “Quarter To Three,” Fame, was born
in Jacksonville, Florida, 67 years ago. Tennis player Bjorn Borg, a
native of Sweden, is 50 today. American Patriot Nathan Hale was born in
Coventry, CT, in 1755.
- WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7: Happy 54th
wedding anniversary wishes to Gordy and Lois Post of Lyons Falls from
their family. Singer/actor Dean Martin was born on this day in 1917 in
Steubenville, Ohio. He died in 1995. Singer Tom Jones (Thomas Woodward)
was born in Wales, 66 years ago. No one can sing “What’s New Pussycat”
like he can, and not many have tried to. Elvis Presley’s Memphis home,
“Graceland,” was opened to the public for tours in 1982 and is still one
of the city’s most sought-after attractions.
- THURSDAY, JUNE 8: Congratulations
to Ryan and Stacy Battles of Port Leyden on the birth of their daughter,
Camryn René, on June 7, from their families and great-grandma Ward. It
was a busy phone morning, with 25 calls between 6 a.m. to 8:25 a.m.
Former First Lady, Barbara Pierce Bush, wife of our 41st President
George Bush, was born in Rye, New York, 81 years ago. Singer/actor James
Darren is 70 today. Back in the ’60s, he was called “Moondoggie” in the
“Gidget” movie starring Sandra Dee. “These Boots Were Made For Walking”
was Nancy Sinatra’s biggest hit song. Nancy, a native of Jersey City,
NJ, and the daughter of the late Frank Sinatra, is 66 today.
- FRIDAY, JUNE 9: Happy 33rd
wedding anniversary wishes to Lynn Klein of the the East Road from
husband Starr. On Sunday, Marion Shaw of Indian River will celebrate her
85th birthday from all her family. This morning in 1980, the first June
snow, 3/10 of an inch, was measured at the Jackson Hill Weather Station.
Liv Lansing reported that in 31 years of record keeping, he had never
seen it snow in June. Walt Disney introduced Donald Duck in a movie,
“The Wise Little Hen,” in 1934. The inventor of guitars named after him,
Les Paul, was born 91 years ago in Waukesha, WI. Actor Michael J. Fox is
45 today and is a native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The Everly
Brothers topped the music charts today in 1958 with “All I Have To Do Is
Dream.”
