following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of June 4th, 2007:
- MONDAY, JUNE 4: Harold and Nancy
Wheelock of Boonville celebrate their 47th wedding anniversary today
with best wishes from sister, Betty. Happy 24th anniversary to Jeff and
Diane Ward of Remsen, from Mom Ward and the family. The first Pulitzer
prizes were presented on June 4, 1917, and have been awarded ever year
since. If you remember “Gunsmoke” or “McCloud,” you’ll remember Dennis
Weaver who played Chester. He was born today in Joplin, Missouri, in
1924 and died of cancer on February 24, 2006 at his home in Ridgeway,
Colorado.
- TUESDAY, JUNE 5: Dave and
Florence Muha of Talcottville celebrate their 31st anniversary, with
best wishes from Cathy and Gary, and Jim, Cheryl, and grandchildren.
Country music legend Conway Twitty died of an aneurysm as he was
returning to Nashville after a show in Branson, Missouri. He was 59. his
real name was Harold Jenkins, a native of Friars Point, Mississippi, and
raised in Helena, Arkansas. In 1957, he changed his name, which came
from Conway, Arkansas and Twitty, Texas. He passed up the opportunity to
play for the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team, deciding instead to
follow his dreams of a singing career.
- WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6: The Merry Hill
Weather Station reported 37 degrees this morning, replacing the coldest
morning temperature of 40 degrees on this date in 1980 and 1998. An
earthquake rattled the North Country at 9:16 a.m. this morning in 1980,
measuring 3.7 on the Richter Scale. The radio station was flooded with
calls that morning. Historically, the first drive-in movie theater
opened n Camden, New Jersey, in 1933. 60’s pop singer, Gary U.S. Bonds,
of “Quarter to Three” fame, was born in Jacksonville, Florida, 68 years
ago.
- THURSDAY JUNE 7: For the second
day in a row, Merry Hill reported 37 degrees, replacing the 39-degree
reading in 1985. Highmarket recorded a 29-degree low with frost. Happy
81st birthday to Marge Barker here in the North Country, from brother
Dennis, sister Tiny, and family. Country singer Trace Adkins has been
invited to perform at the 2007 President’s Dinner on June 13. More than
5,000 people attend this special event. In 1972, “Grease” opened on
Broadway and in 1978, it was made into a movie. A brand-new Broadway
production is scheduled to open on August 19, 2007, in New York City.
- FRIDAY, JUNE 8: Happy 50th
wedding anniversary wishes go out to Gerald and Ruth Lamont of the Chase
Lake Road, from Doug, Rhonda, and family. Betty Buckley of Boonville
celebrates her 95th birthday today, from neighbors George and Bev, and
from Marge Larrivey who planned a party for her at noon today. Boonville
residents were startled to see an airplane, a silver Constellation in
sections on four tractor-trailers coming down Post Street last evening.
The aircraft originated from Canada and was on its way to Empire Aero at
Griffiss in Rome for refurbishing, and will end up in a museum in
Seattle, Washington. On tomorrow’s date in 1980, the first snow in June
in 31 years, was measured at the Jackson Hill Weather Station. The
temperature dropped to 32 degrees and between 1 and 2 a.m., 3/10 inches
of snow was measured. In 1972 on June 10, it snowed during Dale and
Debbie Liddle’s wedding, according to Dale. The Liddle’s live in
Forestport.
