George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of June 2nd, 2008:
- MONDAY, JUNE 2: Congratulations
to Mike Cihocki and Angela Napierkowski on their wedding Saturday
afternoon from their families and friends. Happy 35th anniversary wishes
to Bob and Rita Higby of West Leyden from their children. Today Jenny
DeCarlo of Lowville celebrates her 80th birthday, with happy wishes from
Richard and Arletha Bellinger. Baseball legend Babe Ruth retired today
in 1935 after 22 seasons, 10 World Series, and 714 home runs. He was one
of the first five to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
- TUESDAY, JUNE 3: Happy 55th
anniversary wishes go out to Susan Roy of Glenfield from husband Raymond
and family. Those nasty caterpillars have arrived in Boonville again. I
believe this is the last year of their five-year cycle. I use Agway
Orchard and Fruit Spray to protect our small trees. Actor Tony Curtis
was born in the Bronx in 1925 and has appeared in over 100 films. He was
married five times and is now confined to a wheelchair. Singer Reba
McEntire married her manager Narvel Blackstone in Lake Tahoe in 1989.
Singer Donna Fargo performed at the Boonville Fair in 1982 with a huge
crowd attending. Her biggest hit, “The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA,”
reached the top of the country charts today in 1972.
- WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4: Yesterday
Pierce and Dorothy Schwendy of Lowville celebrated their 67th
anniversary with congratulations from their friends at Brown’s Plumbing
and Heating. Harold and Nancy Wheelock of Route 12D celebrate their 48th
anniversary, with best wishes from family and friends. We best remember
him as “Chester” on the Gunsmoke TV series. Dennis Weaver was born today
in Joplin, Missouri, in 1924. He died of cancer in Ridgeway, Colorado,
on February 24, 2006. The man who invented the Pringles potato chip can,
Fredric Baur of Cincinnatti, Ohio, died on May 4, 2008, at age 89.
Honoring his wishes, part of his cremated remains were placed in a
Pringles container and placed in his grave.
- THURSDAY, JUNE 5: Happy 60th
anniversary wishes to Chuck and Bernie (Bernice) Carter of Lowville from
all their family and friends. Happy 32nd anniversary wishes to Lawrence
Moshier of Boonville from wife Darlene. Country music legend Conway
Twitty died today in 1993 as he was returning to Nashville after a
performance in Branson, Missouri. The cause of death was an abdominal
aneurysm. I interviewed Conway at the Boonville Fair in 1969. Nine years
ago today, a bull moose was sighted at North Lake in Forestport.
- FRIDAY, JUNE 6: The North Country
all lost sleep last night as thunder, lightning and heavy rains moved
through the area. By 7:30 a.m., 2.44 inches of rain was measured here at
the station, but no damage was reported. In 1980, an earthquake rattled
the North Country at 9:16 a.m. and measured 3.7 on the Richter Scale.
Today is National Donut Day, celebrated on the first Friday in June. In
1917 Salvation Army female volunteers made thousands of donuts for
homesick soldiers that served in France during World War I. In 1938,
National Donut Day was officially established in Chicago to raise
funding during the Great Depression by the Chicago Salvation Army. Over
10 billion donuts are devoured annually in the U.S. alone. The first
Drive-In Theatre opened tonight in Camden, New Jersey, in 1933, charging
25 cents per car and 25 cents per person.
