George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of May 29th, 2007:
- TUESDAY, MAY 29: Congratulations
to Bob Morczek, the Highmarket weather observer, for being selected as
one of 20 nationwide, who will receive a prestigious award from the
National Weather Service. His reports are given to the radio station
each morning. It was this morning in 2003 when the old Christmas tree in
the Little Village Park was cut down and replaced. The tree was taken to
a saw mill and the resulting planks were used in the construction of the
covered bridge, so part of the tree is still with us. On this morning in
2004, the ground turned white at Lake Placid while Eric Pfendler of
Boonville was fishing. The late comedian Bob Hope was born in London in
1903.
- WEDNESDAY, MAY 30: Yesterday,
John and Frances Buneo of Port Leyden celebrated their 59th anniversary,
with best wishes from their 5 children. Today, Vet and Dorothy Dissatell
of Lowville celebrate their 48th anniversary. Eleanor Hoskins of Port
Leyden is 87 years young, with love from Linda, Jeff and Billy. In 1901,
the cannon in the Little Village Park was dedicated. Residents of
Saranac in the Adirondack Mountains were greeted with 5” to 6” of snow
this morning in 1983. One year ago, a bolt of lightning struck the
Chucky Myers’ dairy barn on Route 12D and it was completely destroyed.
Country music superstar Dolly Parton married Carl Dean in Catoosa
County, Georgia, in 1966 and they are still married.
- THURSDAY, MAY 31: An 80th
birthday party for Louise Ziegler of Boonville is planned for Saturday,
June 2, at Dwayne and Charlotte Ziegler’s home on the Mineral Springs
Road. In weather history, a peak wind of 73 mph was clocked on the
Rector Road out of Martinsburg in 2002. Some called it a microburst, as
roofs were blown off and trees uprooted during the 3:30 p.m. storm. In
1998, a tornado watch was issued, but never developed. That evening, the
granite keystone over the entrance to the Community Bank in downtown
Boonville dropped to the front steps. Since the bank had closed for the
day, there were no injuries. The front of the building was refaced and
is now the home of Persnickity. Folk singer Peter Yarrow, of “Peter,
Paul and Mary,” was born in New York City 69 years ago. Actor/director
Clint Eastwood, a native of San Fransisco, California, will celebrate
his 77th birthday today. Football Hall of Famer Joe Namath was born in
Beaver Falls, PA, in 1943.
- FRIDAY, JUNE 1: Congratulations
to Lucas and Corey Morrow of Watson on the birth yesterday of a
daughter, Julia Lov, with best wishes from mom, dad, Dan and Adam. This
Sunday, Ray and Sue Roy of Glenfield will celebrate their 54th
anniversary. Today, Robert and Lucy Larkins of Copenhagen celebrate
their 50th anniversary, with best wishes from their six children and
nine grandchildren. Actor/singer Andy Griffith was born in Mount Airy,
NC, 81 years ago. In 1959, Johnny Horton’s song, “The Battle of New
Orleans,” topped the pop charts. Betty Moonan of Boonville was selected
as our “Senior of The Week” this morning because of her volunteering
efforts in many organizations. She will receive a bouquet of flowers
from Apple Blossom Floral Shoppe in Boonville. The Beatles released
“Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” on this day in 1967. The album
sold 8 million copies and was a number one best seller for 15 weeks.
