George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of May 15th, 2006:
- MONDAY, MAY 15: Mother's Day
wasn't sunny, but Laurie was treated to dinner at Beardslee Castle in
Little Falls by son Dan and wife Susan. The 1860 castle just drips with
history, and we had a great time. Upon arrival home, we received a call
from son Chris and René from Denver, Colorado, to complete Laurie's day.
Today, Rick and Rose Croniser celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary,
with best wishes from the family, and also 30th anniversary wishes to
Joanne Korman from husband Tom who called from Albany from his tractor
trailer. Everyone has heard of the "Wizard of Oz." The author, Lyman
Frank Baum, was born in Chittengo, NY, in 1856. Baseball Hall of Famer
George Brett was born in Moundsville, WV, 53 years ago. It was this
morning in 1998 when a moose walked by Hammond's Trailer Park on the
Walker Road in Boonville.
- TUESDAY, MAY 16: Happy
anniversary to David and Janet Marmon of Port Leyden, as they celebrate
their 53rd, from son David and sons. Walt Swerdowski of Boonville
celebrates his 86th birthday, with best wishes from wife Liz. The beauty
of spring is more evident as lilacs and lily of the valleys have all
bloomed this week, as well as flowering crab and apple trees. The
dandelions also offer a carpet of yellow to the countryside. Actor and
former "James Bond," Pierce Brosnan, was born in Ireland 53 years ago.
Country music super group, Alabama, released "Tennessee River," their
first RCA single in 1980.
- WEDNESDAY, MAY 17: Happy 54th
anniversary wishes to Ronald and Donna Wendell who spend the summers at
Rocky's Recreation area on Potato Hill, from their family. Julius
Lehosky of the River Road at Beeches Bridge celebrates his 85th birthday
today, with best wishes from his family. Happy 48th wedding anniversary
wishes go out to Hank and Eileen Treen of Echo Lake Road, from Ethel. In
1973, the ground was white with snow in Ava with more to come later
today. Band leader Lawrence Welk died of pneumonia in 1992 at the age of
89. He was born in Strasburg, North Dakota, and was one of eight
children. Boxing Hall of Famer, Sugar Ray Leonard, was born 50 years ago
in Washington, DC. It was 20 years ago when Eric Pfendler of Alder Creek
broke a New York State trout record, when he pulled the huge fish from
Lake Placid, weighing in over 32 pounds. He's still trying to break his
own record. Good luck Eric!
- THURSDAY, MAY 18: Dan Hurley of
Lowville celebrates his 94th birthday and still loves to Polka and Clog,
according to Dean, René, Jason and Kelsey. Twins Harvey Everson and
sister Edna celebrate their 86th birthday today in Lowville. Country
music superstar George Strait was born in Pearsal, Texas, 54 years ago.
It was 8:32 a.m. this morning when Mount St. Helens in the State of
Washington erupted, killing 57 people and destroying 210 square miles of
wilderness. It was estimated that 10 million trees were knocked down.
Ash from the explosion circulated the earth in the following two weeks.
My brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Leisha, were camping at
Yellowstone National Park and found ashes on their sleeping bags and
brought back samples.
- FRIDAY, MAY 19: Happy 55th
anniversary wishes to Bert and Charlotte Austin of Beaver Falls, from
Joanne and Ken. A severe outbreak of tent caterpillars in Boonville's
Little Village Park has required that the trees be sprayed at 9:30 a.m.
this morning, which should end the problem.
