George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of May 14th, 2007:
- MONDAY, MAY 14: Mother’s Day
brought sunny skies and a high temperature of 58 degrees. Son Chris and
René called from Denver and said the temperature reached 90 degrees. Son
Dan and Susan of Newport brought a complete supper Saturday evening,
because Laurie had to work Sunday. They brought basil lasagna, which was
delicious. Bud and Faith Murling of Swancott Mills celebrate their 58th
anniversary, with best wishes from daughter Sue, Fred, Shelly and
Christopher. Al and Linda Marmon of Lyons Falls celebrate their 24th
anniversary. Linda said Al’s been singing all these years, but isn’t
getting much better! Josie Burke of the VanArnam Road has to blow out 77
candles today, with best wishes from her family. In 2002, there was snow
measured on all the hilltops this morning at 7 a.m.
- TUESDAY, MAY 15: The author of
the “Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” Lyman Frank Baum, was born in Chittenango,
NY, in 1856. In 1942, wartime gasoline rationing went into effect in 17
states. Motorists were only allowed three gallons a week for
non-essential vehicles. A new product hit the shelves today in 1940 in
the United States and were called nylon stockings. Tom and Dick
Smothers, singers and comedians, made their debut at Carnegie Hall in
1964. Their first network series started in 1965. Country singer Eddie
Arnold was born near Henderson, Tennessee, 89 years ago.
- WEDNESDAY, MAY 16: Happy 20th
anniversary wishes go out to Keith and Jill McConnell of Boonville, and
to Carlton and Janet Horvath of Indian River, from their families. Last
evening’s Academy of Country Music award show gave Kenny Chesney the
honor of “Entertainer of the Year” for the third straight year. Brad
Paisley was “Top Male Vocalist,” and Carrie Underwood won the top
“Female Vocalist of the Year.” A nice soaking rain started overnight in
Boonville, measuring .40 of an inch. We’ve had a dry spell with only .12
inches of rain from May 1 to May 15.
- THURSDAY, MAY 17: Congratulations
to Sam and Megan Hall of Lowville on the birth yesterday of a son, Lucas
John, with best wishes from Gramma. David and Janet Marmon of Port
Leyden celebrated their 54th anniversary yesterday, according to son
David and family. Hank Treen of Boonville called to wish his wife Eileen
a happy 49th anniversary today. Lorna Lehman of Croghan counts up 80
candles on her birthday cake, with best wishes from her family. Dr.
Terry Hausserman of the Foothills Veterinary Clinic in Boonville
celebrates his birthday, with best wishes from his employees.
- FRIDAY, MAY 18: Happy 87th
birthday to Harvey Everson of Glenfield from twin sister Edna Mathis.
This was a heavy phone call day at the station, with 27 incoming
messages, which were mostly birthdays. It was on this morning in 1973
when 6 inches of snow arrived in the North Country. Schools were closed
and apple blossoms were damaged that year. At 8:32 a.m. this morning in
1980, Mount St. Helens, a volcanic peak in Washington State, erupted. It
was reported that 57 people were killed and 210 square miles of terrain
was flattened. Scientists today say the dome is growing steadily, but
don’t expect another blast soon. Country music superstar George Strait,
a native of Pearsall, Texas, is 52. Baseball Hall of Famers, Reggie
Jackson is 61 and Brooks Robinson is 70.
