George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of May 12th, 2008:
- MONDAY, MAY 12: We celebrated
Mother’s Day weekend differently this year. We checked out Cornell
University’s Botanical Gardens, but we were a month early, as many
plants were just emerging. We enjoyed a Mother’s Day dinner in a fine
restaurant, visited a winery, and stayed overnight in the 1873 restored
Taughannock Inne overlooking Cayuga Lake. It was a beautiful get-away
weekend. Happy Birthday to Florence Studer of the Clifton-Fine Nursing
Home at Star Lake who celebrates her 101st birthday, with happy wishes
from her family. On Mother’s Day in 1996, 1.4 inches of snow was
measured at the Jackson Hill Weather Station.
- TUESDAY, MAY 13: Brad and Peg
Dale of Boonville celebrate their 36th anniversary today, with best
wishes from their friends. One of TV’s “Golden Girls,” Bea Arthur, was
born in Brooklyn 86 years ago today. Grammy winner Stevie Wonder was
born in Sagnaw, Michigan, 58 years ago. In weather history, a massive
tornado struck Emberson, Texas, in 1981, destroying 90 percent of the
town. It was reported that a man in a bath tub was blown a quarter of a
mile away and survived the unexpected trip. In 1986, a Kentucky State
Trooper’s car was struck by lightning while on patrol near Carrolton,
burning a hole in the truck lid and blowing the rear tires. He wasn’t
injured.
- WEDNESDAY, MAY 14: Happy 59th
anniversary wishes to Bud and Faith Murling of Swancott Mills from
daughter, Sue and family. Norman and Betty Yousey of Castorland are
enjoying their 42nd anniversary, with congratulations from their family
and friends. After 180 episodes, the final Seinfeld TV series ended
tonight in 1998. It was estimated that 76 million people tuned in for
the last program. All six seasons of the show are available on DVDs, and
the show is still in syndication worldwide. The German physicist,
Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit, was born today in 1686 and is credited with
developing a mercury thermometer to more accurately measure
temperatures. Country singer Dwight Yoakam will perform Thursday night
on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. This will be his 24th appearance,
breaking the record for the most musical performances by any artist.
- THURSDAY, MAY 15: Happy 32nd
anniversary wishes to Bruce and Sheryl Martin of Inlet from Jarrad and
Cheri Martin. Today would have been singer Eddy Arnold’s 90th birthday,
but he died a week ago this morning. It may be a national record. Girl
Scouts of USA report that 15-year-old Jennifer Sharpe of Dearborn,
Michigan, has sold 17,328 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies. Her Troop #813
raised $21,000, which will pay for a 10-day trip to Europe this winter.
Lyman Frank Baum, author of the “Wizard of Oz,” was born in Chittenango,
NY, in 1856. He died in Hollywood, CA, on May 6, 1919. The Volkswagen
plant in Pueblo, Mexico, produced the 20,000,000 car in 1981.
- FRIDAY, MAY 16: Congratulations
to former Boonville native, Staff Sgt. John Ludwikowski and wife Valerie
on the birth of a daughter in Fort Bliss, Texas, yesterday morning.
Well-known actor Pierce Brosnan, a former James Bond in the movies, was
born in Ireland 55 years ago. Singer Janet Jackson was born in Gary,
Indiana, 42 years ago. It was on May 18, 1973, when 6 inches of snow
arrived, mostly in the Ava area. Adirondack schools were closed, small
trees were bent over, and apple blossoms were damaged that year.
