George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of May 5th, 2008:
- MONDAY, MAY 5: Congratulations to
David and Shirley Stevens of Lee Center on the birth of a son, Tyler
Allen Stevens, on Friday morning at 3:27 a.m., weighing 4 pounds, 10-1/2
ounces, with happy wishes from Grandma and Grandpa Stevens. Homeowners
beware, we found tent caterpillars in a nest in the top of our flowering
crabapple tree over the weekend. This is the week that hummingbirds
normally arrive. In 1990, we had a report of hailstones the size of
quarters on Gomer Hill. In 1995, the worst hailstorm to hit the United
States in the 20th century arrived in Dallas and Tarrant counties in
Texas. Tennis ball size hailstones struck, injuring people denting
vehicles, and ruining crops, with $1.5 billon in damages reported. In
2004, a large moose showed up at the Mark Croniser farm, just up the
road from the radio station. Denver, Colorado, reports that April was
the fifth driest month since records begin in 1872, with only .32 inches
measured. Their record least rain was .03 in 1963. In comparison,
Boonville’s rainfall for April was 4.67 inches.
- TUESDAY, MAY 6: Happy birthday
and happy anniversary to Bob and Jeanne Dano of Boonville. Both have
birthdays and will celebrate their 41st anniversary, from Mike, Wendy,
and the crew. Also, happy 30th wedding anniversary wishes to Tim and
Donna Everson of Lowville, from all the kids and grandchildren. Our
newsman, Brian Best, observes his 12th year with the radio station
today. Chrysler proudly offered to the public a brand-new model in 1928
named the DeSoto. In its first year, 80,000 cars were sold. The last
DeSoto came off the production line on November 29, 1960, after
2,000,000 were built.
- WEDNESDAY, MAY 7: Right on
schedule are the hummingbirds. I had a report from West Lowville that
last night the first ones had arrived, and Jim and Donna Merriam of
Boonville saw some yesterday. In 2001, a large black panther was seen
going through a field on Gomer Hill. Sandy Fazekas of Gomer Hill said
she saw a panther three years ago, perhaps the same one. In 1967, Stu
Edic, who lived at Beaver River Station, reported he measured 13 inches
of snow this morning at the end of Stillwater Reservoir. Actor Gary
Cooper was born in Helena, Montana, in 1901. He starred in dozens of
movies, including “High Noon” and “Sergeant York,” receiving Oscars for
best actor from both films. He died in Hollywood on May 13, 1961. About
a zillion dandelions appeared on the radio station lawn this morning,
our first “free” flowers.
- THURSDAY, MAY 8: Happy 65th
anniversary wishes to Harvey Everson of Lewis County Extended Care
Facility in Lowville, from wife Alice. Famous birthdays include Ricky
Nelson, who was born in Teaneck, New Jersey, to Ozzie and Harriet
Nelson. He scored 30 Top 40 hits from 1957 to 1962, and was killed in a
plane crash New Year’s Eve in 1985. Melissa Gilbert, best remembered
from TV’s “Little House on the Prairie,” celebrates her 44th birthday
and is a native of Los Angeles, California. The novelty song, “Tennessee
Bird Walk” in 1970, earned a gold record that year. A husband and wife
from Buffalo, NY, Jack Blanchard and Misty Morgan, recorded the classic,
and today Jack celebrates his 66th birthday. Country Music Hall of Famer
Eddy Arnold died this morning near Nashville in a care facility, after
his recent hip replacement surgery. He would have celebrated his 90th
birthday next Thursday, May 15.
- FRIDAY, MAY 9: Congratulations to
Travis and Becky Gleasman of Boonville on the birth yesterday of a son,
Brady Michael, who weighed 8 pounds, 6-1/4 ounces. He will join a
brother, Bailey William, at home. Jim and Jane Allen of West Leyden
celebrate their 38th anniversary today, with best wishes from their
family. Longtime CBS newsman Mike Wallace was born in Brookline, MA, 90
years ago. Singer Billy Joel, a native of Hicksville, NY, is 59 today.
On tomorrow’s date in 1954, Bill Haley and the Comets’ classic rock and
roll song, “Rock Around the Clock,” was released.
