George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of May 1st, 2006:

  • MONDAY, MAY 1: The first bluebird arrived at the radio station Saturday morning and was checking out our two bird houses, but hasn’t made a housing choice yet. Two impressive birthdays were called in this morning. Mildred Goutermout of Lowville is 91 years young, with best wishes from her friends and family. Also, Mrs. Helen Glenn of New Bremen is 90 today, with happy birthday wishes from her family and friends. Longtime country music singer Sonny James was born in Hackleburg, Alabama, 77 years ago. Country super star Tim McGraw, a native of Delhi, LA, is 39 today. Elvis Presley married Priscilla Beaulieu in Las Vegas in 1967. The Empire State Building in New York City was dedicated today in 1931 by President Herbert Hoover.

  • TUESDAY, MAY 2: Happy 47th wedding anniversary wishes to Bill and Laura Williamson of Constableville, from his seven sisters, two brothers, and their families. Three couples celebrate 25th anniversaries today, including George and Berniece Kraeger and Deforest and Denise Flansburg of Constableville, and Mark and Michelle McIntyre of Port Leyden. This is the day Boonville never forgets. In 1983 at 10:30 p.m., the area was struck by a tornado, doing considerable damage. Twenty years before, in 1963, the village Union Block was destroyed by fire in the area that Eckerd Drugs now occupies.

  • WEDNESDAY, MAY 3: Congratulations to Travis Weber and Sharra Champion on the birth of a son, Austin Douglas, born yesterday. Best wishes from Mom and Dad Weber and Mom and Dad Snyder. Happy birthday to Remsen harmonica player, Oliver “Ollie” Jones on his 99th birthday, from his family. Car collectors may not know that General Motors Corporation bought the Chevrolet Motor Car Company of Delaware in 1918 on yesterday’s date. The car company was founded by William Durant and Swiss racer Louis Chevrolet. Folk singer Pete Seeger was born in New York City 87 years ago. The godfather of soul, James Brown of Augusta, Georgia, is 73. Grammy winner Christopher Cross of Anston, Texas, is 55 today. National public radio began today in 1971.

  • THURSDAY, MAY 4: Two 49th anniversary couples celebrate today, including Gerald and Priscilla Boliver of Indian River, and Harold and Phyllis Winter of Boonville, with best wishes from their families. Happy birthday Roy Bookhagen of Otter Creek on his 84th birthday today, from wife Marge, Craig and Amy, and Lucas and Jenna. Country singer Randy Travis is 47 today. He is a native of Marshville, NC.

  • FRIDAY, MAY 5: Congratulations to Tim and Darlene Seelman of Boonville on the birth of triplets on Wednesday. Their three boys are named Timothy Mark at 5 pounds, 12 ounces, Toby Thomas, 5 pounds, 13 ounces, and Tyler Duane at 5 pounds. The proud grandparents are Tom and Shirley Battles and great-grandma is Lena Pfendler. Tim is the son of the late Elva Szot. Also, congratulations to Andy and Dawn Croniser of the Woodgate/Forestport area on the birth last evening of a son, Atlas Drew, coming into the world at 5 pounds, 7ounces. Best wishes from all the family. Stella Domagala of Glenfield celebrates her 90th birthday today, from all her family and friends. I had a report of a moose spotted Wednesday morning on Roue 28 near McKeever Hill, but didn’t walk into the roadway. In 2004, there was a moose about a mile from the radio station, which stayed around the Croniser farm for several days. On yesterday’s date in 1990, hailstones the size of quarters fell in the Gomer Hill area, with no damage reported. On tomorrow’s date, Brian Best, our “Moose” newsman, celebrates his 10th year at the radio station. He’s been a dependable good friend, I might add.
