George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of April 28th, 2008:
- MONDAY, APRIL 28: Saturday night
brought the village .50” of badly needed rain. The last significant rain
was .90” in the village on April 11. Today we expect a good rain with
most of it to soak into the parched ground. Celebrity birthdays include
Ann-Margaret, who was born in Stockholm, Sweden, 67 years ago. If you
remember the TV series “Welcome Back Kotter,” Marcia Strassman, a native
of New York City, is 60 today. We remember him as “Festus” from Gunsmoke,
Ken Curtis, died at 74 in Fresno, CA, in 1991. Tonight Show host Jay
Leno was born in New Rochelle, NY, 58 years ago. I’m sure the class of
1958 will remember the #1 pop hit, “Witch Doctor.” It reached the top of
the charts today.
- TUESDAY, APRIL 29: Snow was in
the air this morning from West Leyden to Croghan, but no accumulation,
between 6:30 and 8 a.m. In 2002, snow started at 6:50 a.m., dropping
visibility here at the station down to 1 mile. The snow melted as it hit
the ground. In 2003, a moose was reported crossing Route 28 near Singing
Waters Campground. If you grew up in the ’50s listening to songs like
Charlie Brown and Poison Ivy, you would remember the Coasters. Lead
singer, Carl Gardiner, celebrates his 80th birthday today. Pop singer
Tommy James was born today in Dayton, Ohio, in 1947. You hear his songs
like “I Think We’re Alone Now” and many others on our Oldies 900
station. He now lives in Monrow, Wisconsin. The “Intimidator,” Dale
Earnhardt, was born today in 1951. One of NASCAR’s hottest drivers, he
was killed on the last lap of the Daytona 500, February 18, 2001.
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30: Happy 64th
anniversary wishes to Dick and Cel Fuller of Petries Corners from Terry,
Sharon, and all the family. Happy 85th birthday wishes to Lavina
Nellenback of Watson from son Fred. Singer Willie Nelson was born in
Abbott, Texas, 75 years ago. 60’s heartthrob Bobby Vee was born in
Fargo, North Dakota, 65 years ago. He put dozens of top 10 pop songs on
the charts, including songs like “Take Good Care of My Baby” and his
million seller, “Come Back When You Grow Up Girl.” I enjoyed his concert
several years ago in Syracuse.
- THURSDAY, MAY 1: Happy 60th
anniversary wishes to Donald and Mabel Young of Boonville from George
and Bev Wheelock and Stuart and Shirley Dunn, and Helen Abel. The Empire
State Building in NYC was dedicated in 1931 by President Herbert Hoover
and at the time it was the world’s tallest skyscraper. From the ground
to the top of the lightning rod, the elevation is 1,454 feet. Today’s
tallest building is Taiwan’s Taipei 101, which is 1,670 feet tall.
Country singer Sonny James was born 79 years ago in Hackleburg, Alabama,
and has enjoyed 21 number one songs. Also, Tim McGraw, a native of
Delhi, Louisiana, who was raised in Start, Louisiana, celebrates his
41st birthday today.
- FRIDAY, MAY 2: Happy 49th
anniversary to Bill Williamson of Boonville, from Laura. Yesterday,
Helen Glenn of Watson celebrated her 92nd birthday, with best wishes
from her family and friends. I was told she still stacks her firewood.
On Sunday, Roy Bookhagen of Glenfield will observe his 86th birthday,
with best wishes from wife Marge, Craig, Amy, Lucas, and Jenna. Today
marks the 45th anniversary of Boonville’s Union Block Fire and tonight
the 25th anniversary of the Boonville tornado. On Saturday, Alicia Rae
Kelley and John (JD) Logan will be married at 1 p.m. at St. Peter’s
Church in Lowville, with lots of love and best wishes from their
families and friends.
