following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of April 24th, 2006:
- MONDAY, APRIL 24: We had several
special birthdays called in this morning. Laura Reed of Lowville
celebrates her 100th birthday, with best wishes from Rita Alexander.
Dorothy Nellenback of West Branch is 81 today, with happy birthday
wishes from her children and grandchildren. Actress and singer Barbra
Streisand was born in New York City 64 years ago. A very collectible
car, the Chevy Corvette ZR1, ended production today in 1995. From
1990-1995, 6,939 cars were produced, offering 405 horsepower with a top
speed of 180 mph, the fastest Corvette ever built. the car was nicknamed
“The King of the Hill.”
- TUESDAY, APRIL 25: Happy 19th
wedding anniversary wishes to Bruce and Tammy Wheelock of Boonville from
Mom and Dad Fallon and Mike. Also, Bruce and Crystal Manzer, now living
in Maine, celebrated their 19th anniversary, with best wishes from Mom
and Dad Dunn of Boonville. Our history lesson today goes back to 1901
when NYS required license plates on vehicles to be displayed. The plates
were 3 inches high and featured the owner’s initials at a cost of a
dollar. The state collected $954 that first year. One of World War II’s
most influential reporters, Edward R. Murrow, was born in Greensboro,
NC, in 1908. He died of lung cancer in Pawling, NY, April 27, 1965.
Parishioners at St. Mary’s Church in Constableville were surprised when
a bolt of lightning struck the steeple creating a 4-foot hole at 7:38
a.m. in 1993. No other damage was reported.
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26:
Congratulations to David and Barbara Kantor of Forestport on the birth
of a son, Seth David, born yesterday. The proud grandparents are George
and Donna Kline of Boonville, and Edward and Maureen Kantor. Happy 52nd
wedding anniversary wishes to Robert and Elizabeth Stabb of
Talcottville, with love from their family. Celebrity birthdays include
Carol Burnett, born in Philadelphia, PA, 64 years ago, and still does
occasional shows. The best-known rock and roll guitarist of the ’50s and
’60s, Duane Eddy, was born in Corning, NY, in 1938. He was originally
married to Jessi Colter. She later married country music legend Waylon
Jennings. The world’s worst nuclear disaster occurred this morning in
the USSR in 1986 as an explosion in the Chernobyl Power Plant sent
radioactive material into the air. Thousands of cancer deaths were
reported since the mishap.
- THURSDAY, APRIL 27: Happy
birthday to Dick Lee, at Lee Pontiac in Boonville, from all his family
and friends. Happy 21st anniversary wishes go out to Bill Paluck of
Boonville from wife Carol. It was this day in 1937 when the first social
security checks were authorized to be sent out. Longtime actor Jack
Klugman was born in Philadelphia, PA, 84 years ago. Singer Sheena Easton
was born in Bellshill, Scotland, in 1959. She is best remembered for her
#1 song, “Morning Train, Nine to Five” from 1981, one of her best
remembered songs. FRIDAY, APRIL 28: Happy 50th wedding anniversary
wishes to Gene and Louise Lyndaker of Croghan, from their family and
friends. Actress-singer Ann Margaret, a native of Stockholm, Sweden,
celebrates her 65th birthday. “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno was born 56
years ago in New Rochelle, NY.
