George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of April 21st, 2008:

  • MONDAY, APRIL 21: Another beautiful weekend was enjoyed, with the Boonville Cleanup Day a big success. It’s surprising that the grass is greening up as well as it is considering that the last good rain fell on April 11 with .95 measured at the Merry Hill Weather Station. Fire danger is still high due to dryness. Happy 42nd anniversary wishes to Ben and Pat Swiernik of Boonville, from Terry, Hope and family. Eight years ago this morning, a moose wearing a yellow tracker collar was seen in West Leyden.

  • TUESDAY, APRIL 22: The very first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 with an estimated 20 million people participating, and it is growing each year. Today, Lowville is holding their first Earth Day community trash cleanup from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. with orange Earth Day trash bags to be picked up Wednesday morning. Singer Glen Campbell was born in Delight, Arkansas, 72 years ago. His web site lists 129 albums have been released since 1962. He hosted the TV variety show, Glen Campbell’s Goodtime Hour, for several seasons. Boonville endured steady snow and 48 mph winds today in 1993 with 11-1/4 inches of snow measured at the Jackson Hill Weather Station.

  • WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23: We received an e-mail to send congratulations to Eric and Shannon Thayer of Boonville on the birth Saturday of their son, Ely Dayton Thayer. Happy 91st birthday wishes to Mildred Norton of the West Road near Constableville, from Tim and Susan. Dave and Pat Rounds of Lyons Falls will celebrate their 48th wedding anniversary, with best wishes coming from Bruce and Rene. Actress Valerie Bertinelli, who co-starred in the TV series, “One Day At A Time,” was born in Wilmington, Delaware, 48 years ago today.

  • THURSDAY, APRIL 24: Special birthday wishes to Laura Reed at the Residential Healthcare Facility in Lowville. Today is her 102nd birthday, with her family sending their best wishes. Lawrence Seeloff of Port Leyden will find 85 candles on his birthday cake today. Happy birthday from Harold, DeEtta and family. Birthday greetings to Dorothy Nellenback of Kortenaer Village in Boonville on her 83rd today, from her niece Vicky. Corvette lovers might like to know that the last 405 hp ZR-1 Model was produced today in 1995. This 180 mph sports car was built from 1990 to 1995 with 6,939 being produced. In 2004, a moose stayed in the area of Backer’s home on the Dutch Hill Road for two days.

  • FRIDAY, APRIL 25: Historically, at 7:38 a.m. this morning in 1993, a bolt of lightning struck the steeple at St. Mary’s Church in Constableville, creating a 4-foot hole, but luckily there was no fire. There were parishioners in the church at the time. Tomorrow, guitar player Duane Eddy will celebrate his 70th birthday. He was born in Corning, NY, and had dozens of instrumental hits in the late ’50s and ’60s, including “Cannonball” and “Because They’re Young.” He was originally married to Jessie Colter, who later married Waylon Jennings in 1969. One of the Golden Boys of Bandstand, Bobby Rydell, was born in Philadelphia in 1942.
