following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of April 21st, 2007:
- MONDAY, APRIL 21: Happy 47th
anniversary wishes to David and Pat Rounds of Lyons Falls, from Bruce
and Rene. Mildred Norton of the West Road celebrates her 90th birthday
today, with love from her family. Forest Rangers have issued a Red Flag
Day warning for this area, which means no open burning. The ground
surface is very dry with low humidity. A violation carries a $250 fine.
Another sign of spring is the arrival of the swallows this morning. They
seem to inhabit my bluebird houses before the bluebirds do. Beloved
singer Roy Orbison was born on this day in 1936 in Vernon, Texas. He
died at age 52 of a heart attack in 1988.
- TUESDAY, APRIL 22: Happy 36th
wedding anniversary wishes to Tom and Mary Farr of Turin, from Kay and
the family. Last night’s thunder and lightning storm did little damage
in the village, but this morning Route 26 near Stokes is still
barricaded. Doug and Peggy Martin of Stokes lost their roof from the
high winds. For the first time, the peepers could be heard this morning.
In car history, the “King of the Hill” Chevy Corvette ZR-1 ended
production today in 1995. The car was built for six years, totaling
6,939 vehicles, and had a top-end speed of 180 mph pushed by a 405
horsepower engine.
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23: Happy 20th
wedding anniversary wishes to Bruce and Tammy Wheelock of Boonville and
Bruce and Crystal Manzer of Maine, from their parents. Parishioners of
St. Mary’s Church in Constableville were startled when lightning struck
and blew a 4-foot hole in the steeple of the church at 7:38 a.m. in
1993. There was no fire, but considerable damage was reported, and
repair work restored the steeple to its original condition. It was 500
years ago today when a German cartographer, Martin Waldseemveller, used
the name America to describe a huge mass of land in the western
hemisphere, while working on a world map. the name was in honor of
Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci. The famous Hubble telescope was sent
aloft on the Discovery shuttle in 1990 from the Kennedy Space Center in
Florida.
- THURSDAY, APRIL 24: Happy 53rd
wedding anniversary wishes to Bob and Liz Stabb of Talcottville, from
all the family. Dave and Gigi Hollister of Old Forge celebrate their
50th anniversary, with best wishes from Will, Andrea, Alexis and Carley.
Today is Richter Scale Day, in honor of Charles Francis Richter who
developed a scale to measure earthquake activity. He was born in 1900
near Hamilton, Ohio. Comedian-actress Carol Burnett was born 74 years
ago in San Antonio, Texas. The “King of the Twangy Guitar” back in the
’60s, Duane Eddy, a native of Corning, NY, is 69 today. A teenage
heartthrob in the ’60s and one of the golden boys of Bandstand, Bobby
Rydell, is 65 today. He still lives in his hometown of Philadelphia, PA.
Actor Tom Welling, who plays Clark Kent in the TV series “Smallville” is
30 today. He was born in West Point, NY.
- FRIDAY, APRIL 25: Happy 93rd
birthday wishes to Francis Evans, with love and best wishes from
Charlie, Sharon and the entire Perkins family. I received a call to
congratulate Mark Doner and Elizabeth Hass of Stoney Lake Road on the
birth last evening of a daughter, Emily Louise, with best wishes from
Tim and Tina Cobb. Actor Jack Klugman was born in Philadelphia, PA, 85
years ago. Dolly Parton recorded one of her best-known songs, “Coat of
Many Colors,” for RCA in 1971.
