George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of April 17th, 2006:
- MONDAY, APRIL 17: Easter Sunday
brought sunny skies but a cool temperature high of 54 degrees and a low
this morning of 31. Another sure sign of spring is the arrival of a pair
of swallows checking out the bluebird houses this morning. Happy 35th
anniversary wishes to Gary and Theresa Hoffman of Port Leyden, from
their family. Florence Oliver of the Sunset Nursing Home celebrates her
85th birthday today. Haver Gydesen of Lyons Falls counts up 80 candles
today, with best wishes from Otter Creek friends and his brothers and
sisters. In 1964, Ford Motor Company presented to the public a new car,
the Mustang, at the New York World Fair.
- TUESDAY, APRIL 18: The
congregation of the Talcottville Methodist Church send happy anniversary
wishes to Bob and Bea Vicks of Boonville on their 60th today. San
Francisco, California, is commemorating the 100th anniversary of a
massive earthquake and resulting fires; 700 people were killed. American
history reminds us of Paul Revere and Richard Dawes’ famous ride in 1775
when they rode their horses from Charlestown to Lexington, MA, to warn
the colonists that British militiamen were soon to arrive. Actress
Hayley Mills was born in London, England, in 1946. Many of us can
remember her teenage double role in Disney’s “The Parent Trap” back in
the early ‘60s. The late famous cowboy Gene Autry, recorded what was to
become his trademark song, “Back in the Saddle Again” in 1939.
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19: Happy 37th
wedding anniversary wishes to Dick and Linda Dean of Pine Grove, from
their family. It was this day two years ago when Ethan Allen announced
plans to close the Boonville furniture division, eventually putting
hundreds of employees out of work. Two tragic events in American history
developed on this day. In 1993, the Branch Dividian compound near Waco,
Texas, was destroyed by fire after a 51-day siege. Then in 1995, the
Alfred Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma was destroyed by a truck
bomb, claiming 168 lives and injuring dozens of others.
- THURSDAY, APRIL 20:
Congratulations to Kenny and Jenny Lyon of North Carolina on the birth
Tuesday of a daughter, Lillian Kendel. Jenny is formerly of Boonville
and Kenny from Forestport. Best wishes from great-grandma and grandpa
Dave and Carol Leffingwell. Two earthquakes made history today. At 4:46
p.m. in 2000, a quake measuring 3.7 on the Richter Scale, was centered
near Ray Brook in the Adirondacks. Four years ago, an earthquake at 6:50
a.m. was centered near Plattsburgh and reached 5.1, as measured at
Potsdam College. Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, was the
scene of a massacre in 1999, when two students shot and killed 12
classmates and a teacher before taking their own lives. My son Chris
teaches at Centennial School, about a mile up the road from the high
school.
- FRIDAY, APRIL 21: Happy 40th
wedding anniversary wishes to Ben and Pat Swiernik of Boonville, from
Terry, Hope, and family. In weather history, the Jackson Hill Weather
Station reported that this week in 1971 brought the total winter
snowfall up to 300 inches, with 45 inches still found in the woods. Very
unusual for this time of year, but a moose wearing a tracker collar was
seen in West Leyden today six years ago. On tomorrow’s date in 1993,
heavy snow, being whipped at 48 mph, entered the North Country and by
the next morning, 11-1/4 inches of snow was measured.
