George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of April 16th, 2007:

  • MONDAY, APRIL 16: What a way to start the week! A Nor'Easter arrived during the night, with the Merry Hill Weather Station measuring 17.5 inches at 5:55 a.m., with more on its way. 12 inches was found in the village, at the station and in Highmarket. The heavy wet snow brought down branches and trees, with National Grid reporting 3,800 customers locally and 28,000 statewide, without power. It’s a good thing all North Country schools have this week off for vacation. Happy 41st anniversary wishes to Bob Zehr of Croghan from wife Nancy, and to Sheldon Main at Sunset from wife Betty and family. I had a report of an albino robin on the Brewery Road in Croghan with just a black head. Singer Bobby Vinton was born in Canonburg, PA, 72 years ago. Our son Chris will be working this summer at the Natural Bridges Monument in Utah, operated by the National Park Service. This area was established on this day in 1908.

  • TUESDAY, APRIL 17: Finally, a break from the stormy weather with 50s and 60s by Sunday. On this day in 2002, the temperature rose to 82. More spring birds are being sighted. We had a flicker pecking in the brown grass at the station this morning. Nancy Schneeberger from the Wetmore Road near Watson had all her bird feeders pulled down by a black bear and after its snack, moved on. Must be the bears have awakened from their hibernation. Boonville’s average snowfall is 211 inches. As of today, this season’s total is 196.9 inches, with Highmarket totaling 278.1 with 20 inches on the ground. Several snowmobile trailers drove by the station this morning. In 1964, Ford introduced the Mustang at the New York World’s Fair in Flushing, Queens. The base price was $2,368. One year later to the day, the GT option was offered.

  • WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18: Congratulations to Brian and Keisha Davis of Croghan on the birth of a daughter, Carly Jo, early this morning. Best wishes from Jim and Janette Davis and great-grandma. Nellie Pate of Valley View Court in Lowville celebrates her 103rd birthday, with best wishes from her family and friends. Best wishes for a happy retirement to Wendy Glazier after working 33 years at the USDA Farm Service Agency in Lowville. A luncheon in her honor will be held today and her last day of work will be April 30. The first Laundromat, called a “Washateria” opened today in 1934 in Fort Worth, Texas. Cowboy-singer-actress Gene Autry recorded his trademark song, Back in the Saddle Again,” in 1939. In 1906, the great San Francisco earthquake struck at 5:13 a.m., resulting in massive destruction, fires and death. Most fires were extinguished by April 23, and estimates were 3,000 people died and nearly 30,000 buildings were destroyed. Happy 44th wedding anniversary wishes to Stanley and Glenda Yager of Hawkinsville from their children and grandchildren.

  • THURSDAY, APRIL 19: Yesterday, Bob and Bea Vicks of Boonville celebrated their 61st anniversary, with best wishes from their friends. Happy 38th anniversary wishes to Dick and Linda Dean of the Pine Grove Road, from all the Dean family. It was three years ago when Ethan Allen of Boonville announced to their employees that the company was closing its Boonville and other furniture building plants. In 1897, the first Boston Marathon was won by John J. McDermott. In 1995, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was destroyed by a truck bomb, killing 168 people. Timothy McVeigh was convicted and executed for the crime.

  • FRIDAY, APRIL 20: There’s only a trace of plowed snow left from the Nor’Easter in the North Country, with spring a little more evident now. It was at 6:50 a.m. this morning in 2002 when an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale, was felt from Canada to Maryland, including this area. Locally, there was no damage, but Route 9N in the Town of Ausable Forks sustained some serious road damage. This quake was similar to the one in 1983 at Newcomb. I was on a fishing trip to Lake Placid at the time, and we all felt and heard the noise, similar to a freight train. Sadly, we remember this day in 1999 when two students at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, killed 12 classmates and one teacher. Son Chris teaches 5th grade at Centennial School, also in Littleton, about a mile away from Columbine. In weather history, on tomorrow’s date in 1971, the 300-inch snowfall mark was reached with 45 inches in the woods.
