George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of April 14th, 2008:
- MONDAY, APRIL 14: The snowmelt
has been slow and easy with no flooding locally. There’s just a trace
along the tree line behind the radio station. In 1921, the greatest
24-hour snow accumulation in U.S. history occurred at Silver Lake,
Colorado, on April 14 and 15 with 76 inches measured. Montague in Lewis
County thought they broke the record on January 11, 1997, when 77 inches
from a lake-effect storm buried the area. The National Weather Service
denied them the record because of incorrect record-keeping.
Additionally, Silver Lake finished their storm with 87 inches in 27-1/2
hours. I bet spring thawing was late that year.
- TUESDAY, APRIL 15: Happy 30th
anniversary wishes to Mark and Rosemary Krokowski of Port Leyden from
Becky and the kids, and from Mom, Dad, and family. Belle Kilb of
Forestport observes her 89th birthday today, with congratulations from
the staff at the Forestport Senior Nutrition Site. After striking an
iceberg in the North Atlantic just before midnight April 14, 1912, the
Titanic sank at 2:20 a.m. on the 15th. Of the 2,200 passengers, 1,500
went down with the ship. Today is sometimes remembered as Rubber Eraser
Day, honoring English chemist Joseph Priestly in 1770. He discovered
that a small cube of latex would erase pencil marks, and because many
erasures are made to income tax returns before mailing, this day is
remembered.
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16: Two couples
celebrate their 42nd anniversary today. Bob and Nancy Zehr of Croghan
have best wishes coming their way from Dave, Lory and the kids. Also,
Sheldon and Betty Main of Talcottville will celebrate, with
congratulations from their daughters and son-in-law. One year ago, 17.5
inches of snowfall was measured at the Merry Hill Weather Station.
Highmarket measured 7 inches from the same storm. Singer Bobby Vinton
was born in Canonsburg, PA, 73 years ago. I believe he appeared last
weekend at Turning Stone Casino in Verona.
- THURSDAY, APRIL 17: Two couples
share 37th wedding anniversaries today. Gary and Teresa Hoffman of Port
Leyden, and Roger and Dona Beyel of West Leyden. The NYS DEC warns
residents to be real careful of outdoor fires due to the dryness.
Boonville firefighters had three calls yesterday relating to outdoor
burning. Also village residents should be aware of the village ordinance
prohibiting the use of ATVs anywhere in the village. Fines can be stiff.
Ford unveiled their first Mustang at the opening of the New York World’s
Fair in 1964. The base price was $2,368, but most buyers added an
average of a $1,000 in options.
- FRIDAY, APRIL 18: Special
birthday wishes to Nellie Pate of Lowville who celebrates her 105th
birthday. Congratulations from 30 people whose names were on the
announcement. Happy 62nd anniversary wishes to Bob and Bea Vicks of
Boonville from the congregation of the Talcottville Methodist Church.
Stanley and Glenda Yager of Hawkinsville celebrate their 40-plus
anniversary today, with best wishes from Jim, Dawn and Brian. A
shock-wave went through Boonville April 19, 2004, when Ethan Allen
announced they were going to close their furniture building plant.
Because of that decision, 300 workers would be losing their good paying
jobs. Today, the facility is still vacant, except for the log buying
business, which still supplies their other plants.
