George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of April 9th, 2007:
- MONDAY, APRIL 9: Our traditional
Easter dinner was enjoyed by 23 family members at our small house
yesterday and driving conditions were excellent. Happy 47th wedding
anniversary wishes go out to Charlie and Barb Traxel of Boonville from
their children and grandchildren. June Salmon of Constableville
celebrates her 80th birthday, with best wishes from sister Marylou and
Frank Croniser. There’s snow in the forecast for the next seven days.
Highmarket’s total snowfall as of today is 257.3 inches and Boonville’s
is 172.4 inches. Winter had a late start, but spring hasn’t been very
productive yet, as daily temperatures hover in the 30s. Country singer
Hal Ketchum, a native of Greenwich, NY, is 54 today. The Hulbert House
is continuing their renovations and now have a new bright green roof.
- TUESDAY, APRIL 10: Happy 59th
anniversary wishes to Les and Nancy Trainor of Boonville, from Deb, Dale
and family. Estella Smith of Alder Creek counts up to 88 candles on her
birthday cake, with best wishes from her family. It was this day in 1912
when the new luxury liner, the RMS Titanic, left Southhampton, England,
on a trip it wouldn’t return from, sinking on April 15 after striking an
iceberg. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
was incorporated in 1866. In 1829, the Salvation Army’s founder, William
Booth, was born in Nottingham, England. Paul McCartney of the Beatles
announced the break-up of the group in 1970 and also released his first
solo album.
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11: Wildlife in
the Village of Boonville is more evident lately. Jodi Croniser on Summit
Street said she had deer, possums, foxes, and rabbits in her backyard
near the bird feeders. Here at the station yesterday, I watched seven
deer jumping around in the field across the road. Happy birthday to
Brian Best of Deer River, our “Moose” newsman, from all his co-workers.
He’s Mr. Dependability! If you grew up in the ’50s, you may remember a
series of movies featuring “Bomba, the Jungle Boy,” similar to the
Tarzan movies. Johnny Sheffield was a teenager then, but he celebrates
his 76th birthday today. One-time NYS Governor, Hugh Carey, celebrates
his 88th birthday today. Country music superstars, Alabama, signed with
RCA Records today in 1980, and by 1987 on this day their 21st number one
record, “You’ve Got the Touch,” topped the charts.
- THURSDAY, APRIL 12: Bill and
Jenny Covey of Port Leyden celebrate their 55th anniversary today, with
best wishes from their family. Happy 32nd anniversary wishes are
extended to Asa and Pam Holbrook of Lowville, from Rick and Colleen West
of Lowville. It was snowing hard at 4:40 a.m. and was difficult to see
the road when driving to the station this morning. The first time a
catcher’s mask was worn in a baseball game was in 1877 when James Tyng
of Harvard put one on. The Salk Vaccine was declared safe against polio
in 1955. In 1934, a wind gust on top of Mt. Washington, NH, reached 231
mph and was the highest on the planet up to that time. Country singer
Vince Gill was born today in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1957.
- FRIDAY, APRIL 13: Happy
retirement day to Tom Houppert of Lowville, who has worked for the Lewis
County Highway Department for 24 years. Best wishes from his co-workers
and his friends at the Watson Inn. We’ve recorded westerly winds up to
29 mph at 8:26 a.m. here at the station. A resident woodchuck has lived
around the radio station for the past three years and made his first
spring appearance on Tuesday. Tomorrow, country singer Loretta Lynn of
Butcher Hollow, Kentucky, will celebrate her 72nd birthday. Also on
Saturday, baseball legend Pete Rose will be 66. He was born in
Cincinnati, Ohio.
