George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of April 3rd, 2006:
- MONDAY, APRIL 3: Congratulations
to Jeff and Debbie Lyndaker of Canton on the birth Friday of a son,
Nathan Danehy. Jeff is originally from Croghan. Best wishes from both of
their families. Ed and Agnes Ford of Watson celebrate their 42nd wedding
anniversary. Best wishes from their friends at the Lowville American
Legion and the Marine Corps. The author and creator of “Rip Van Winkle”
and the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Washington Irving, was born in New
York in 1783 and died in Tarrytown, NY, in 1859.
- TUESDAY, APRIL 4: A new arrival
is celebrated by Mark and Cristen Stanford of Glenfield. A daughter,
Brooke Nadine, as born yesterday morning and will be welcomed home by
two brothers, with best wishes from Mindy, Jason and Trenton. Happy 42nd
wedding anniversary wishes to Ben and Barb Sweeney of Boonville, from
brother Clifford. The star of the TV series, “Coach,” Craig T. Nelson,
is 62 today. The man that invented the “Yale Lock,” Linus Yale, was born
in Salisbury, NY, in 1821 and died in New York City on December 25,
1868. The house he lived in is visible on Main Street in downtown
Newport, NY. Country singer Red Sovine died in Nashville at the age of
61. Singer Bobby Goldsboro was presented with a gold record in 1968 for
his huge hit record, “Honey.”
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5: After two
days of heavy rain in 1987, the under-layment of the Schoharie Bridge,
near Amsterdam, on the New York State Thruway, gave way causing the
bridge to collapse. Ten people died when they plunged into the raging
river below. The entertainment world was shocked this morning after
learning that Gene Pitney died of natural causes after a performance in
Wales, at the age of 65. He wrote and sang hundreds of hit songs,
including “Only Love Can Break a Heart,” “Town Without Pity,” and wrote
Rick Nelson’s hit “Hello Marylou.” I saw his show at Turning Stone four
years ago. Celebrity birthdays include actress-singer Gale Storm, who is
84 today; the late Johnny Cash’s brother, Tommy Cash, is 66; and country
singer and half of Montgomery-Gentry, Troy Gentry, is 39 today.
- THURSDAY, APRIL 6: My weather
history book shows a massive storm starting this morning in 1979. I
found zero-visibility driving to the station. Winds were recorded at 60
mph, and all roads were closed. By tomorrow morning, 19-1/2 inches of
new snow were measured on Jackson Hill. Country music legend Merle
Haggard was born 69 years ago in Bakesfield, California, and is
currently on tour. If you watch the TV series “Made in America” on the
Travel Channel on Monday nights, or watched “Cheers,” well-known actor
John Ratzenberger, a native of Bridgeport, CT, is 59 today. The locals
tell me he has walked into the Old Forge Post Office on several
occasions. Michelle Phillips, formerly of the pop group, “The Mamas and
Papas,” was born in Long Beach, California, in 1944. Robert Peary,
leading an expedition, has been credited with discovering the North Pole
in 1909. He didn’t find Santa though! The Ford Motor Company began
offering Whitewall Tires on their vehicles in 1934, as an option, at a
cost of $11.25 per set.
- FRIDAY, APRIL 7: Congratulations
to Coach John Bernard and the Adirondack track team on winning their
meet, 103 to 38, over Mohawk yesterday. Country singer Cal Smith, who
sang “Country Bumpkin” in 1974, is 74 today. He is a native of Oklahoma.
Also, country singer Bobby Bare was born in Ironton, Ohio, 71 years ago.
We still play his hit “Detroit City” on the station. Football Hall of
Famer Tony Dorsett was born in Aliquippa, PA, 52 years ago.
