George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of April 2nd, 2007:
- MONDAY, APRIL 2: We watched an
impressive thunder and lightning storm cross the area between 5 and 6
a.m. this morning, which dropped .08 of an inch of rain. As of today,
we’re about 80 percent bare with traces of snow left from snowplowing
this winter. Yesterday, Laurie and I started our vegetable garden and
flower seed plantings in our cellar. You don’t save any money, but you
have the pleasure of growing plants that you can’t buy in a greenhouse.
Congratulations to Tim Hutchins and Andrea Reppard of Boonville on the
birth yesterday of a son, Timothy Levi, with best wishes from the
Podkowka and Reppard families. Weather extremes for today indicates a
high temp of 57º in 1986, a low of 13º in 2003, and 60” (snow in the
woods) in 1971.
- TUESDAY, APRIL 3: Happy 43rd
Anniversary wishes to Betty Brown of Castorland from husband Charlie and
family. If you watched the 80s TV show, Knight Rider, you will remember
“Kitt,” the black 1982 Pontiac Trans Am super car. A car dealer in
Dublin, California, has spent a decade finding parts to restore the
famous car and now has it up for sale. The asking price is $149,995. It
was this day in 1860 when the legendary “Pony Express” began operating
between St. Joseph, MO, and Sacramento, CA. Actress-singer Doris Day was
born in Cincinnati, Ohio, 83 years ago. The singer who gave us “Tie A
Yellow Ribbon ’Round The Old Oak Tree,” Tony Orlando, a native of New
York City is 63 today.
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4: Happy 78th
birthday wishes to Isadore Paluck of Constableville from wife Lillian
and family. In 2003, a surprise 6 inches of snowfall caused schools to
close from Holland Patent to Watertown. On this day in 1968, The Rev.
Martin Luther King Jr., was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1818,
Congress decreed that the U.S. Flag would have 13 red and white stripes
and 20 stars, with a new star to be included for each new state that
joins the Union. Singer Bobby Goldsboro was presented with a gold record
in 1968 for his hit song “Honey.” In 1960, RCA Records started releasing
albums that were both mono and stereo to record buyers.
- THURSDAY, APRIL 5:
Congratulations to Ben and Amanda Morczek of Highmarket on the birth of
a son, Jayden Albert, last evening. Proud grandpa, Bub, said he’s a
grandpa for the first time. Also yesterday, Ray and Christy Hastwell of
Boonville now have a new daughter, Mallorie Rose, who will be joining
siblings Morgan and little Ray at home. Happy 93rd birthday wishes to
Pete Gydesen of Lyons Falls from his great-grandson Stephen Aden.
Yesterday morning, at home in the village, an unusually marked skunk
waddled up our driveway. It was pure white with a black stripe running
down its back. The star of the ’50s TV series “My Little Margie,” Gale
Storm, was born in Bloomington, Texas, 85 years ago. She recorded
several top 10 songs between 1955 to 1957, including “Dark Moon,” “Ivory
Tower,” and her first hit, “I Hear You Knocking” in 1955. It was last
year when we lost singer-songwriter Gene Pitney at the age of 66. He was
on tour at the time in Cardiff, Wales.
- FRIDAY, APRIL 6: Congratulations
to Albert Barbarito and Jackie Chapman on the birth of a daughter, Daisy
Marie, last evening from Gramma Rogers and family. We had a rip-snortin’
snow storm arrive today in 1979 and by tomorrow morning, 19-1/2 inches
was measured at the Jackson Hill Weather Station. Former “Cheers” star,
John Ratzenberger, and now host of the Travel Channels, “Made in
America” celebrates his 60th birthday. He shows up in Old Forge on
occasion.
