George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of March 31st, 2008:
- MONDAY, MARCH 31: Another morning
of freezing rain at 32 degrees caused five schools to delay with
Adirondack closing. I don’t recall another year with so much freezing
rain. We should have a lot of water in the snowpack when the snow melts.
Happy anniversary to Roy and Sandy Aden of Lyons Falls who celebrate
their 40th today, from their family. Mike Muha of Boonville celebrates
his 79th birthday, with best wishes from his family and grandchildren.
Happy birthday to Carol Miller down at C. Hughes Hardware in Boonville,
from husband Arnie, family, and co-workers. As we look at 13 inches of
snow on the ground in the village, it’s hard to believe it was 78
degrees today in 1998.
- TUESDAY, APRIL 1: Some historians
speculate that April Fools Day dates back to 1582 in France when the
switch from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar was made. No
matter, it’s always a day for lighthearted pranksters. It was 44 years
ago today when I started my first day of work here at the radio station.
It’s hard to believe that I’m still here after three owners and rapidly
changing technology, but the job’s still a pleasure, thanks to all you
listeners. AMC introduced America’s first sub-compact car, the Gremlin,
in 1970. General Electric Company announced they had produced the first
metal radio tube in 1935. Actress Debby Reynolds was born in El Paso,
Texas, 76 years ago today.
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2: Yesterday’s
forecast called for high winds last night, and it proved correct. Howie
Haig on the Crofoot Hill Road in Constableville clocked 56 mph gust at
11:12 p.m. Rick Beyer on the Rector Road reached 55 mph at 8:14 p.m. In
the village, I recorded 38 mph at 11:35 p.m. WBRV-FM on Jackson Hill
lost power twice, keeping the electric department of the Boonville
Municipal Commission busy overnight. Historically, Spanish explorer Juan
Ponce de Leon came ashore on the Florida coast in 1513 and claimed the
territory for Spain. The first American movie theater, built to show
movies only, opened in Los Angeles in 1902.
- THURSDAY, APRIL 3: Happy 60th
anniversary wishes to Duke and Helen Mihalyi of Lowville, from Wayne,
Jackie and Chris. Bernice Bower of Lyons Falls celebrates her 90th
birthday today, with best wishes from son Charles and Jackie in Texas,
sister Suzy and daughter Marilyn, and family. American author Washington
Irving was born today in 1783. His writings include “Rip Van Winkle,”
and the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” He died in Tarrytown, NY, on November
28, 1859. Actress-singer Doris Day was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, 84
years ago. Entertainer Wayne Newton was born in Norfolk, Virginia, in
1942. March 2008 was the third driest month according to records that
have been kept since1872, in Denver, Colorado.
- FRIDAY, APRIL 4: Happy 79th
birthday wishes to Izzi Paluck of Constableville, from wife Lillian,
their children, grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. NATO was
formed today when delegates from 12 countries gathered in Washington,
DC, in 1949, to sign the North Atlantic Treaty. The inventor of the Yale
Lock, Linus Yale, was born in Salisbury, NY, in 1821. There is a
historical marker in front of his former home in Newport, NY. He was
also a portrait painter and passed away Christmas day in 1868.
