George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of March 24th, 2008:
- MONDAY, MARCH 24: The cold
weather continues on in the North Country. The Merry Hill Weather
Station reported 7 above this morning. In the past 36 years, 6 degrees
was the lowest temperature in 1983, and the warmest day was 63 in 1987,
and in 2000, Easter was sunny but only 30 degrees was the high reading
in the village. It was this day in 1989 when the tanker, the Exxon
Valdez, ran aground in Alaska, spilling 11 million gallons of oil along
the shoreline with major environmental damage. Harry Houdini, the famous
magician and escape artist, was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1874 and
died on Halloween in 1926. After being drafted, Elvis Presley was sworn
into the Army in 1958.
- TUESDAY, MARCH 25: I finally saw
the first red-winged blackbird here at the station this morning and
heard geese flying over. Maybe spring warmth will eventually arrive. Son
Chris and Rene called from Denver last night and reported they were
skiing yesterday, and he plans on playing golf today during spring
break. He said they’ve enjoyed short-sleeve shirt weather recently.
Everyone is looking forward to spring after what seems to be a long
winter. The first measurable snow, 2-1/2 inches, was found November 7,
2007, and there still is 15 inches of snow on the ground at the weather
station. Bob Bush of Martinsburg celebrates his 84th birthday with best
wishes from Bernie and Barb. Happy 84th birthday wishes go out to Bea
Bartelotte of Lyons Falls, from her three sons, daughter, and their
families and friends.
- WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26: Celebrity
birthdays today include Jennifer Grey. She played Baby Houseman in the
hugely successful movie, “Dirty Dancing,” from the summer of 1987 with
Patrick Swayze. She was born in NY 48 years ago. If you remember TV’s
“The Rifleman,” you’ll remember the 15-year-old co-star, Johnny
Crawford. An original Mouseketeer, he joined Chuck Connors in the
western series, and also recorded five Top 40 songs, including “Cindy’s
Birthday,” which made it to Top 10. He was born in Los Angeles in 1946.
Also, singer Kenny Chesney, a native of Knoxville, TN, is 40 today.
- THURSDAY, MARCH 27: I was told
that the reservoir at Stillwater has started their draw-down in
anticipation of a heavier than normal spring-off. Snowmobilers should be
aware of pressure cracks developing, which can be deadly should you run
into one. Several in past years have been killed as ice will sometimes
drop several feet, creating an ice shelf. The southern part of Alaska
was struck by the strongest earthquake in American history in 1964.
Total property damage was estimated at $400 million. President Lyndon B.
Johnson declared Alaska an official disaster area.
- FRIDAY, MARCH 28: Wow, what a
birthday morning it was! I read 48 birthdays and one anniversary, and it
wasn’t a full moon. The anniversary to be celebrated today belongs to
Larry and Denise Monnat of Deer River on their 16th, with best wishes
from Mom and Dad, and the Monnat family. County singer Reba McEntire was
born in Chockie, Oklahoma, 53 years ago today. With four number one
country songs in a row, Rodney Atkins has a reason to celebrate his 39th
birthday today. He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and was put up for
adoption days later. You can check his website,
www.rodneyatkins.com for his biography.
