George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of March 20th, 2006:

  • Monday, March 20: Spring is scheduled to arrive at 1:26 p.m. this afternoon, but with a minus 20º wind-chill at 8:30 a.m. this morning it’s debatable whether we’ll see much improvement. Temperatures are expected to remain in the 20s. I was extremely honored to receive two awards on Saturday night at the Boonville Elks Lodge. The first was for Citizen of The Year and the second, The Elks Distinguished Citizenship Award. Being a willing volunteer throughout the year and helping at various events and activities has its accolades. A big thank you. Country singer-songwriter Jerry Reed, was born in Atlanta, Georgia 69 years ago. Lead guitarist, Jimmy Seales of “Shenandoah” is 52 today, a native of Hamilton, Alabama. The late Beatle, John Lennon married Yoko Ono in Gibraltar in 1969.

  • Tuesday, March 21: Happy 80th birthday wishes to Eugene Farr Sr. of Lyons Falls from wife Elizabeth and two sons. Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the worlds best composers was born today in 1685 in Germany and died there in 1750. Celebrity birthdays today include comedian Rosie O’Donnell who is 44, and the same age is actor Mathew Broderick. Guitar players may remember this day in 1991 when Leo Fender, originator of the Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars passed away.

  • Wednesday March 22: Happy belated 53rd wedding anniversary wishes to Dick and Gladys Lee of Boonville from their family, and today is Glady’s birthday and grandson Tucker is 7 today. Sometimes March can feature some good snowfalls. In 1999, 14.4” of new snow was measured. In 2002 on tomorrows date, 23.3” had to be shoveled away. In 1977, 23.3” started accumulating and ended on the 24th. Actress Reese Witherspoon, who played June Carter Cash in the “I Walk The Line” movie is 30 today.

  • Thursday, March 23: Astronomers remember this day in 1989 when a mountain size asteroid passed by the earth and was considered a close call according to NASA. Comedian Marty Allen celebrates his 84th birthday today. Remember the pop group the “Cars?” Lead singer Ric Ocasek is 57 today. Signs of spring, there were two motorcycles parked on Main Street in Boonville, and a pair of crocus flowers popped thru the snow at our house in the village.

  • Friday, March 24: Wow, what a day for birthdays, I read 40 birthday wishes today including cards and phone calls. It was announced yesterday that country singer Trent Tomlinson will be appearing at the Lewis County Fair this summer. Trent currently has a Top 20 country song, “Drunker Than Me” and has a new CD coming out soon. In music history, Elvis Presley was inducted into the Army today in 1958. He received his draft notice in December but had a deferral while he finished a movie, King Creole. In 1989 the Supertanker, The Exxon Valdez ran aground on a reef in southern Alaska and began leaking an estimated 11 million gallons of crude oil which spread 100 miles along the shoreline and cost millions of dollars to clean up. Magician Harry Houdini was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1874 and died in Detroit, Michigan in1926 on Halloween.
