George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of March 17th, 2008:
- MONDAY, MARCH 17: With over a
hundred people attending Saturday night, the Boonville Elks Lodge
bestowed one of the highest honors, Elk of the Year, to member Laurie
Capron for her “unselfish volunteerism this past year.” The annual
awards banquet included a corned beef and cabbage dinner, following the
initiation of 20 new members. Laurie’s dedication included the
construction and lettering of the new Elks sign and caring for the two
flower beds in front of the lodge; replacing the visitor’s sign at the
entranceway of the building; sanding, priming and painting the rear
outside deck with the help of Sonny Denslow and Steve Kline; painting
the rear downstairs’ stairway; and helping set up tables, chairs and
decorate for the various parties downstairs. I should mention that I
assisted her in all her projects too. Happy 96th birthday wishes to
Agnes Krug of Lyons Falls, from her son, granddaughter Sophia, and
grandson Stephen.
- TUESDAY, MARCH 18: Happy 19th
anniversary wishes to Bob and Kim Kratzenburg of Woodgate, with love
from Tom, Jenn and Wyatt. When Kim was in high school at Adirondack, she
was an intern here at the radio station. The first electric shaver
appeared on the market today in 1931 and was sold by Shick, Inc. Singer
Charlie Pride was born in Sledge, Mississippi, 70 years ago. Before his
country music career, he played baseball with the Detroit Eagles and
Memphis Red Sox of the Negro American Legion, and also played in the
Pioneer League. He put 69 songs on the country charts, with 29 of them
reaching number one.
- WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19: This
morning’s rain with icing caused six schools to delay their openings
until roads and parking lots were sanded. The last episode of the Mary
Tyler Moore show was aired tonight in 1977 after 168 shows. Many of the
programs took place in the WJM TV newsroom with an all-star cast. In the
last episode, everyone except Ted Baxter were fired, ending the series.
In weather history, in 1950, Timberline Lodge, Oregon, measured 246
inches of snow on the ground, setting a state record. We have 14 inches
on the ground this morning at the radio station. According to the New
York State Lottery office in Albany this morning, the big Lotto winner
has not come forward, with the ticket, worth over $189,000, being
purchased at the Boonville Nice N Easy for the March 12 drawing.
- THURSDAY, MARCH 20: Special
anniversary wishes to Elwood and Marie Stoddard of Lowville on their
66th anniversary today. Congratulations from their family and friends.
Spring officially arrived at 1:48 a.m. this morning and there’s a full
moon tomorrow night. That may have something to do with the 26 birthdays
I read this morning. Happy 4th anniversary wishes to son Dan and Susan
Capron of Newport, from Laurie and I, and brother Chris and Rene in
Denver, Colorado.
- FRIDAY, MARCH 21: Happy 77th
birthday wishes to Bob Freeman of the Spencer Road, Boonville, from wife
Elma, family, and from little buddy and tea drinker Haley. In music
history, Johann Sebastian Bach, considered one of the most influential
composers in music history, was born in 1685 in Eisenach, Germany. He
died July 28, 1750, in Leipzig, Germany.
