George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of March 12th, 2007:
- MONDAY, MARCH 12: Congratulations
to John and Shannon Bailey of Boonville on the birth of a son, John
Colton, with best wishes from Grandma and Grandpa Podkowka. Also, Tracy
and Jennifer Jerry of Lowville celebrate the birth of a son this morning
on dad’s birthday, with congratulations from their family and friends.
On Saturday evening, the Boonville Lodge of Elks bestowed one of their
highest awards to member Mark Krist of Boonville, who was presented with
the Elk of the Year honors and a plaque during their yearly banquet and
St. Patrick’s dinner, with 84 members present. Also that evening, 10 new
members were initiated into the organization, joining the seven that
joined three weeks ago. The Girl Scouts of America were founded in
Savannah, Georgia, in 1912. The first Ford Explorer was introduced on
yesterday’s date in 1990 and became a best-selling model soon after.
Singer-songwriter James Taylor was born in Boston, MA, 59 years ago.
Former baseball player, Darryl Strawberry, a native of Los Angeles,
California, is 45 today.
- TUESDAY, MARCH 13:
Congratulations to Joel and Kim Dragon on the birth Saturday of a son,
Blake Alan, from sons, Jordan and Ryan. Happy 2nd anniversary to son
Chris and Rene´ out in Denver, Colorado yesterday, from Mom and Dad, and
Dan and Susan. It was at 11 p.m. this evening in 1994 when the roof of
the Dave Peters’ car dealership collapsed under a heavy snow load. A
possum was spotted on Summit Street in the village Saturday night.
- WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14: A massive
snowstorm ended in 1993 with 21.7 inches of snow measured at the Jackson
Hill Weather Station. Bub Morczek, who plows for the Town of West Turin,
said he had to ride his snowmobile to the Town Barn to get to his
snowplow as the roads were undriveable. One of Boonville’s largest block
fires started this evening in 1978. Lost in the blaze were Dellerba’s
Market and Shoe Store, Hess Pharmacy, O’Brien’s Gift Shop, Holcomb’s
Bakery, and the Tollgate Florist shop, which was going to open the next
day. The fire started in a ceiling fixture over Dellerba’s Shoe Store,
with the entire block destroyed. Lawmakers on Monday in Colorado passed
a resolution making the late John Denver’s song, “Rocky Mountain High,”
the state’s second official song. In past years, West Virginia adopted
his song, “Take Me Home Country Roads,” as their second state song. The
description of blizzard was first used after a severe snow/wind storm
struck Minnesota in 1870.
- THURSDAY, MARCH 15: Happy 55th
anniversary wishes to Izzy Paluck of Constableville, with love for many
more years from wife Lillian. Happy 32nd wedding anniversary wishes to
Dave Wawrzyniak of Boonville, with love from wife Deb. Gerald Lehman of
New Bremen celebrates his 85th birthday, with hugs from wife Lois, and
from Rick, Carol, Catie, Anna and Tiffany. Today is Buzzard Day in
Hinckley, Ohio, which has been observed since 1957. Country music Hall
of Fame member Carl Smith, a native of Maynardville, Tennessee, is 80

birthday.
- FRIDAY, MARCH 16: Another sign of
spring, robins arrived at the radio station yesterday afternoon. Today,
Rodney and Elaine Cannan of Glenfield celebrates their 32nd anniversary,
with best wishes from the girls in Maryland. Today in automobile
history, two milestones were reached. In 1958, Ford produced their 50
millionth car, a Ford Thunderbird, and in 1966, G.M. provided their
100th million car, an Oldsmobile Tornado. Comedian Jerry Lewis was born
in Newark, NJ, 81 years ago. It sounds like a blast of winter weather
will be arriving late this afternoon, as a heavy snow warning has been
issued. Amounts of 4 to 8 inches tonight may be measured by morning.
Eight members of country singer Reba McEntire’s band and road show were
killed in a plane crash near San Diego, California, in 1991.
