George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of March 10th, 2008:

  • MONDAY, MARCH 10: The North Country survived another ice storm Saturday night. The Boonville area had sporadic power outages, but thousands lost their electric power as branches brought down lines in Lewis County. National Grid had restored electric service to most customers by this morning. Congratulations to Sean and Michelle Green of Boonville on the birth Saturday of a daughter, Skyler Haden, coming into the world at 7 pounds, 12 ounces. She joins a brother, Afton, at home, and the proud grandparents are Mike and Diane Green of Boonville and Jim and Sheila Williams of Ava. In automobile history, the first Ford Mustang was produced today and went on sale April 16, 1964, with a base price of $2,368 and sold 1 million cars in its first 18 months.

  • TUESDAY, MARCH 11: Congratulations to Richard Harlan Baslow and Tanya May Kohl on the birth Sunday of a son, Kadin Harlan, and is Rick and Rhonda Baslow’s first grandchild. I received a report from Forestport that 5 geese were swimming in the Black River this morning, and a caller from the East Ava Road was watching 30 red-wing blackbirds in their bird feeder. On this day in 1990, Ford introduced a new model called the Ford Explorer. This was the first of the sport utility vehicles being developed in the early ’90s. Weather extremes for this day include a high temperature of 64 degrees in 1977 and a low of minus 5 in both 1972 and 2005. This morning’s low was plus 4 at 2:07 a.m.

  • WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12: A lot of birthdays are being celebrated today, as I read 24 of them this morning. With yesterday’s high temperature of 34, a good share of the branches and wires released their coating of ice and snow. Singer-songwriter James Taylor was born on this date in Boston, MA, 60 years ago.

  • THURSDAY, MARCH 13: Congratulations to Lindsey and Ashley Fosburgh of Port Leyden on the birth yesterday of a son, Brandon Lee, with best wishes from Randy, Cathy and the kids. Weather history records described it as the “Great Super Storm Blizzard of ’93.” This storm covered most of the east coast and started today, bringing amazing amounts of snow. The Jackson Hill Weather Station measured 21.7 inches of new snow by the next morning. Syracuse picked up 43 inches. He has written over 1,000 songs, still performs, and celebrates his 69th birthday. Neil Sedaka was born in Brooklyn, NY, a son of Turkish parents, and was trained as a classical pianist. He later evolved into pop music and the rest is history.

  • FRIDAY, MARCH 14: Congratulations to Jessie and Ashley Ringwald of Boonville on the birth of a son, Trevor James, born yesterday, with happy wishes from new grandma and grandpa, Jim and Crystal Ringwald. Tonight at 7:15 p.m. marks the 30th anniversary of the huge block fire that destroyed five Main Street businesses. The fire started in a light fixture in an apartment over Dellerba’s Shoe Store and spread into Dellerba’s Market, Hess Pharmacy, O’Brien’s Gift Shop, Holcombe’s Bakery, and the Tollgate Florist, which was to have their grand opening the next day. Thankfully, Hess Pharmacy was rebuilt with a large parking lot filling in the void created by the fire. Our 900 AM Station switched over to Oldies 900 at 10:30 a.m. this morning, one year ago. Some lucky person is the holder of a second-place winning ticket from the Wednesday night NYS Lotto drawing. The ticket was purchased at the Boonville Nice N Easy on Main Street, and is worth $189,185. So far no one has stepped forward with the ticket.
