following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of March 6th, 2006:
- MONDAY, MARCH 6: Happy Birthday
Carl Lamb up here on Rte. 12D on his 89th from all his family. Kris
Egnaczyk, Scoutmaster of troop #13 in Boonville reports close to 500
spaghetti dinners were served at the Boonville Elks Lodge on Saturday
for the largest turn-out in 3 years. A big thank you from all the boy
scouts. The late Johnny Carsons long-time sidekick, Ed McMahon is 83
today. Mary Wilson, one of the three original “Supremes” is 62 today.
Basketball player Shaquille O’Neal is 34 today.
- TUESDAY, MARCH 7: Four days in a
row of sunshine is almost unheard of at this time of the year, so we’d
better enjoy them. A happy 90th birthday is being celebrated by Ruth A.
Widrick of Steepleview in Croghan from all her family. Floyd Moshier of
Beaver Falls celebrates his 79th birthday with best wishes from the
folks at God’s Little Dairy. Television personality and weather man
Willard Scott is 72 today. Two football Hall of Famers celebrate
birthdays today. Franco Harris is 56, and Lynn Swann in 54. We were in
the second day of the biggest snowstorm of the year in 1986, with 19.3”
measured on Jackson Hill with another 6.2” arriving today.
- WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8: Happy
birthday to Loren Sullivan of Port Leyden from his 9 children, 4
sons-in-law, 4 daughters-in-law, 24 grandchildren and 11 great
grandchildren. If everyone arrives for his birthday he’ll have a
houseful. The late Johnny Cash’s sister, Reba Cash Hancock, died Sunday
at the age of 72 after a long illness. A brother, Tommy Cash, and
sister, Joanna Cash Yates, both reside in Nashville. It was announced
Monday that the future NASCAR Hall of Fame will be built in Charlotte,
North Carolina and should be completed in 2009, costing $154.5 million.
Both Atlanta and Daytona Beach had applied for the honor. Micky Dolenz,
one of the original “Monkees” pop group is 61 today. New York Yankee
star Joe DiMaggio died in Hollywood, Florida at the age of 84 in 1999.
Pontiac introduced the Firebird Trans Am in 1969 and still is a
collectible muscle car.
- THURSDAY, MARCH 9:
Congratulations to Mark and Sadie Snyder of Copenhagen on the birth of
their daughter, Amber Mae on Monday, best wishes from mom and Joe. Best
wishes to Lee and Marsha Zehr of Belfort on their 32nd anniversary from
mom and dad. Comedian-actor George Burns died 10 years ago today in
Beverly Hills, California, just weeks after celebrating his 100th
birthday. Author Mickey Spillane was born in Brooklyn, NY, 88 years ago.
Country singer Mickey Gilley was born in Natchez, MS in 1936.
Comedian-actor Bob Hope sang his trademark song, “Thanks For The
Memories” in his first movie, “The Big Broadcast of 1938.” He closed
every TV show with that song.
- FRIDAY, MARCH 10: Signs of spring
are popping up in the North Country. I had a call from Ryan over at the
Ava Town Barn as a flock of geese passed over headed in a northerly
direction. Stuart Dunn over on the East Road in Boonville saw a tree
full of black birds and red winged. Yesterday, due to the lack of snow,
the gates to the Feeder Canal Tow Path Snowmobile Trail were closed. The
very first Ford Mustang was produced today in 1964 and sold for $2,368
and is considered one of America’s most popular car models.
