George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of March 5th, 2007:
- MONDAY, MARCH 5: Winter weather
is evident this morning at the radio station. I measured five inches of
new snow at 4:40 a.m. By 8 a.m. another three inches fell with winds up
to 25 mph at 9:05 a.m. and near zero visibility at times. Schools from
South Lewis to Carthage were all closed. In the past 35 years, the most
snow on the ground in the woods at the Jackson Hill Weather Station was
55 inches and the least amount was 5-1/2 inches in 1983. Country singers
Patsy Cline, Hawksaw Hawkins, Cowboy Copas, and Randy Hughes died in a
plane crash in Camden, Tennessee, in 1963. Also in 1963, the Hoola Hoop
was patented by Arthur “Spud” Melin, founder of the Wham-O Company, best
known for making slingshots and later Frisbees. An estimated 25 million
Hoola Hoops were sold in the first four months of production. Country
group Alabama appeared for the first time at the Bowery Club in Myrtle
Beach, SC, in1973 and the rest is history. Boonville’s Transfer Site on
Route 12 north of the village will be closed on Mondays until further
notice due to a manpower shortage.
- TUESDAY, MARCH 6: The 16 mph wind
has created a wind chill of minus 51 at 7:17 a.m. this morning! It’s so
cold even the crows aren’t flying. Two years ago this morning, it was 37
degrees and a huge skunk waddled across the station lawn. Four years
ago, a bald eagle was spotted on the Pine Grove Road near New Bremen.
- WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7: Happy 59th
anniversary wishes to John and Annabell Crowell of Steuben, near Starr
Hill from family and friends. The Merry Hill Weather Station’s minus 17
degrees last evening was the lowest reading for this day in 35 years. It
was also minus 17 here at the station. Inventor Alexander Graham Bell
was only 29 years old when he was given a patent for his new invention,
the telephone, in 1876. Auto racer Janet Guthrie was born in Iowa City,
Iowa, 69 years ago. The first robin was sighted on Post Street in
Boonville in 2004.
- THURSDAY, MARCH 8: A happy 74th
birthday to Loren Sullivan of Port Leyden from all 71 people who signed
birthday cards that were dropped off at the radio station. I had a
report that the Redwing Blackbirds arrived at Fish Creek Monday, which
some say marks the beginning of the maple syrup gathering season. In
automotive history, the 1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am made its first
appearance on showroom floors on this day, one of the first of muscle
cars of the late ’60s. One of the ’60s pop group singers, Mickey Dolenz
of the “Monkees,” was born in Los Angeles, California, 62 years ago.
- FRIDAY, MARCH 9: This morning’s
low temperature of minus 13 was the lowest reading in 35 years, but a
big warm-up is coming. I could smell a skunk in the village for the
first time this season and had a call from New Hartford that some robins
had arrived. It was at 1:40 p.m. today when a 50 mph wind peeled back
part of the kiln dry building roof at Ethan Allen in Boonville in 2000.
That was a new roof, replaced after the May 3, 1983 tornado. The new
Daylight Savings time change begins on the first Sunday in March and
ends on the first Sunday in November, as dictated by the Energy Policy
Act of 2005. The first Barbie Doll went on display in 1959 at the
American Toy Fair in New York City. Since that time, more than 800
million dolls in the Barbie family have been sold around the world.
