George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of March 3rd, 2008:
- MONDAY, MARCH 3: Freezing rain
disrupted travel this morning early and sanders were quickly dispatched
to keep traffic safe. We wish Mary Mamrosh of Remsen a happy 87th
birthday, with greetings from her family and friends. On Saturday, Leo
Hanno of Glenfield celebrated his 83rd birthday with Doug, Mary and the
kids sending their best wishes. On Friday, Corey and Angela Youngs of
Constableville became parents of a daughter, Carmen Madison, with
congratulations from both families. A sign of spring was reported, as
eight robins arrived this weekend near Denley Dam on the Black River and
others were sighted near the Echo Lake Road. This Saturday night we
begin Daylight Saving Time, which is three weeks earlier than normal
because of legislation signed by President Bush in August 2005. The bill
also extends daylight time to the first Sunday in November, which is a
week later.
- TUESDAY, MARCH 4: Today Jim and
Clara Davoy of the Number Four Road in Watson celebrate their 65th
anniversary, with love from the whole family. There was another sign of
spring this morning, as a woodchuck was spotted on the Brach Road behind
the radio station. Country music comedian Minnie Pearl died today in
1996 at the age of 83 in Nashville. Vermont became the 14th state to
join the Union in 1791.
- WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5:
Congratulations to Fred and Jennifer Maurer Rovente, living near
Binghamton, on the birth of a daughter, Margaret Lillian. They have a
son John at home. The proud grandparents are Tom and Peggy Maurer of
West Leyden. A red-wing blackbird was spotted on the North Lake Road in
Forestport this morning. It was one year ago today that red-wing
blackbirds were seen at Fish Creek. A large owl landed on the top of
Polly Farney’s bird feeder on the Brewery Road in Croghan and stayed
there for hours. The Hula Hoop was patented on this day in 1963 by the
toy company, Wham-O. This company is credited with introducing the
Frisbee in 1957, and later developed Silly String and Hacky Sacks.
- THURSDAY, MARCH 6: It was busy on
the phones this morning. I read 29 birthdays and it isn’t a full moon
until the 21st. Melissa Balash Muha of Boonville left March 5 for the
Amazon in Brazil and will be there until March 18, as she will be
assisting in the set-up of a medical clinic. She is the process of
obtaining a physician’s assistant degree and her family is proud of her
advancing career through SUNY-IT. TV’s Johnny Carson’s sidekick, Ed
McMahon, was born in Detroit, Michigan, 85 years ago.
- FRIDAY, MARCH 7: Happy birthday
wishes go out to Floyd Moshier of Brookside in Lowville. He celebrates
his 81st today from Simon, Marsha, and the children. On March 8, 1969,
Pontiac introduced a new car, the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. The new
muscle car was only one of a series of performance cars produced by
Pontiac. Good luck to Adirondack Central School’s 11th grade grappler,
Kenny Eaton, who will be wrestling in the New York State Wrestling
Tournament in Rochester on Saturday in the 103-pound class. If you’ve
been collecting state quarters, the Oklahoma coin is the latest release.
Also, the Gold Dollar President’s coin, featuring James Monroe, is now
available, to keep your collection up-to-date.
