following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of February 27th, 2006:
- MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27: A frigid
morning greeted us with a low of -13 here at the station. The coldest
reported temperature was minus 27 along the Black River near Carthage
and minus 26 in Forestport. We are currently 2/10” of snow shy of
matching last year’s snowfall of 138” on today’s date. The most snow on
today’s date was 60” on the ground in 1972, with the least snow of 8” in
1983. Celebrity birthdays include Elizabeth Taylor, born in London
England 74 year’s ago, and Poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in
Portland, Maine in 1807 and died in Cambridge, Maine 1882. Happy
Anniversary wishes to Jim and Sue Snyder of Boonville from all their
family and friends.
- TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28: The world
has lost three well-known entertainers in the past four days. On Friday,
Don Knotts died of pulmonary and respiratory complications at the Los
Angeles Medical Center at the age of 81. His role as Deputy Barney Fife
on the Andy Griffith Show TV series will always be remembered with a
chuckle. Also on Friday, Dennis Weaver, who played deputy Chester Goode
on “Gunsmoke,” died in Ridgeway, Colorado from complications of Cancer,
also 81-years old. On Saturday, Darren McGavin, best known for his TV
show, “Kolchak:The Night Stalker,” died in Los Angeles at the age of 83.
- WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1: Happy 81st
birthday wishes to Leo Hanno of Glenfield from Doug, Mary, Ben, Brian
and Sarah. In 1872 Yellowstone National Park was created by
Congressional authorization. In 1961 President Kennedy established the
Peace Corps and since that time 161,000 Americans have joined the
organization serving in 134 nations. Actor and director Ron Howard is 52
today. We remember him best as Opie on the Andy Griffith Show, as
Ritchie Cunningham on Happy Days and starred in the movie, “American
Graffiti.” In 1975, Honda introduced the “Civic” after the 1973 Opec Oil
Embargo brought a need for more fuel efficient cars. The state of
Connecticut issued the the first license plates identifying registered
vehicles in 1937. In 1967 on this day, Johnny Cash and June Carter
recorded, “Long Legged Guitar Pickin Man,” which became a top ten song.
Then one year later, Johnny and June were married on this day.
- THURSDAY, MARCH 2: A happy
retirement day will be observed today as Bob Zehr finishes 38 years of
work at Beaverite in Croghan. Co-workers and friends send their best. In
1923 the first issue of “Time Magazine” hit the newsstands on this day.
The movie “The Sound of Music” opened today in NYC in 1965. Texas
adopted their Declaration of Independence from Mexico in 1836. Bluegrass
singer and musician Doc Watson was born in Deep Gap, NC, 83 years ago.
Rock singer Jon Bonjovi turns 44 today and country singer Larry Stewart
of “Restless Heart” was born in Paducah, Kentucky, 47 years ago. Mount
Ranier National Park in Washington State was established today in 1899.
- FRIDAY, MARCH 3: What a cold
windy morning with a wind gust up to 31mph. and a wind chill of minus 38
at 9:08 a.m. Happy 90th birthday wishes to Margaret Fallon of Forestport
from her family. The inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell
was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1847. He died in Canada on August 2,
1922. Florida became the 27th state to join the Union in 1845. The Star
Spangled Banner became the National Anthem of our Country in 1931, and
Francis Scott Key, the writer is buried in Rome, New York.
