George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of February 25th, 2008:
- MONDAY, FEBRUARY 25: It was a
beautiful blue sky weekend in the North Country and the snowmobile
trails were well groomed, but our news this morning reported five
snowmobiles were stolen in various locations over the weekend. On
Saturday, Alice Belewich of Ava celebrated her 82nd birthday, with best
wishes from her family and friends. Former Beatle George Harrison was
born in Liverpool, England, in 1943, and died of cancer in Los Angeles
on November 29, 2001. Actress Karen Grassle, of the “Little House on the
Prairie” TV series, was born in Berkley, California, 64 years ago. It’s
a rarity, but in 1996, snow rollers were found in a lot of fields here
in the North Country. They are formed when the surface of the snow warms
up and a strong wind breaks the snow loose and as they move, the snow
starts to stick and as they tumble, the circumferences enlarge.
Generally, they will measure about 5 inches, but if on a hill they may
be several feet thick. These are only found every 10 to 15 years.
- TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26: Happy 36th
anniversary wishes to Boonville Mail Carrier “Pup” Leffingwell, with
love from wife Karen and family. Marie Conway of Turin celebrates her
birthday with 92 candles today, with happy wishes from her four children
and their families. Singer Johnny Cash was born near Kingsland,
Arkansas, in 1932 and died of complications of diabetes on September 12,
2003. Early singer and songwriter Fats Domino was born in New Orleans 80
years ago. Wild West showman Buffalo Bill Cody was born today in Scott
County, Iowa, in 1846. He once visited Boonville to see my grandfather,
George O. Capron, as reported in the Boonville Herald. My grandfather
had performed with the Washburn Wild West Show when he met Buffalo Bill.
Cody died in Denver, Colorado, January 10, 1917.
- WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27: Two new
arrivals were reported this morning. Yesterday, Dave and Marrissa Strain
of Forestport celebrated the birth of a daughter, Ruby JoLynn. She was
5-1/2 weeks early, but is doing fine and will join two brothers at home.
Also, Todd and Jessica Fowler of Lowville welcome a son who was born
yesterday. His name wasn’t selected as of this morning, but he will be
greeted by two sisters at home. Happy 54th anniversary wishes to Bob and
Elinor Zeigler of Boonville, from Marlene and the family. Today in 1827
marked the beginning of New Orleans, Louisiana’s Mardi Gras celebration.
Early French settlers brought the tradition to Louisiana at the end of
the 17th century, but it wasn’t until 1827 when students who studied in
Paris brought the celebration to life with masks and costumes. Close to
400,000 revelers annually visit the city for the fun event.
- THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28: It’s still
wintery in the North Country. I measured 22 inches of snow on the ground
in the village with Highmarket reporting 31 inches. The most snow on the
ground at the Jackson Hill Weather Station was 60 inches in 1972. The
Lost Trail Snowmobile Club of Boonville has been busy grooming trails
almost every other day, which are in the best condition of the year. Old
car lovers may like to know that the last Ford Model A was built today
in 1932. The 40 horsepower, four-cylinder car sold for $460 and 5
million were built from 1927 to 1932. In 1983, the final episode of the
TV series “Mash” was aired tonight in 1983 after an 11-year run.
- FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29: The morning
showed some frigid low temperatures, including a minus 20 in Highmarket
and 13 below at the radio station. A 36-year high temperature of 53
degrees was enjoyed on this day in 1991. Ice skating on the race track
at the Oneida County Fairgrounds will be offered again this Saturday and
Sunday afternoon.
