George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of February 18th, 2008:
- MONDAY, FEBRUARY 18: Today Ben
Krist of the Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center celebrates his
90th birthday, and he enjoyed a birthday party yesterday with family and
friends. A powerful cold front went through the North Country two years
ago this morning. I clocked a 47 mph wind in the village with a 99.2 mph
wind recorded at the Maple Ridge Wind Farm, but little damage was
reported. Potsdam College recorded one of New York State’s highest
barometric readings on February 17, 1989. They logged an incredible
31.17 that day. Here at the station, the pressure averages around 29.80.
Dale Earnhardt Sr. was killed during the Daytona 500 NASCAR race in
2001. Old Forge recorded a 52-below zero temperature this morning in
1979, setting a state record.
- TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19: The face of
downtown Boonville changed on this day in 2001. A fire broke out on the
second floor of the Gaslight Restaurant, which spread into the Jackson
Furniture Store, destroying both businesses. Jackson Furniture did
rebuild on the foundation of the two buildings with a enlarged building.
The first prototype of the Ford Thunderbird was finished today in 1954.
The new model went on sale in the fall as a 1955 and had a price tag of
$2,944. Thomas Edison received a patent today in 1878 for a new machine
called a phonograph, which used a needle to play tin cylinders.
- WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20: Warnings
of a large lake-effect snowfall last night didn’t materialize in the
North Country. Highmarket measured 5.4 inches, with Merry Hill reporting
2.1 inches. Projections were from 8 to 16 inches in heavy snow bands,
but that didn’t happen. Harold Hayes, formerly of Mohawk Hill,
celebrates his 90th birthday at Sunset today, with congratulations from
his friends and relatives. Fred Hughes of Boonville counts up 81
birthday candles today, with best wishes from Dan, Heather, and family,
and from nieces Marilyn and Carolyn. In 2003, there was a partial roof
collapse at Country Store and Yard Care in Alder Creek, which was vacant
at the time. The biggest storm of the year in 1972 dumped 24.5 inches of
snow at the Jackson Hill Weather Station. That storm brought the level
ground snow depth up to 66 inches on the morning of February 21. The
first of two moon eclipses in 2008 will be visible tonight starting at
8:43 p.m. The second will be a partial eclipse on August 16.
- THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21: We send
happy birthday wishes to Mary Rowlands at Sunset on her 85th birthday,
from her six children, 17 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
It’s another sub-zero morning in the North Country. I saw 15 below at
6:44 a.m., and Highmarket bottomed out at 22 below overnight. In 2004,
the roof of the Stanley Jones’ dairy barn collapsed in Talcottville,
with no injuries to his cows. The barn was later rebuilt. In 2003, I
watched a pure white skunk waddle across the radio station lawn, and on
the same morning a pure white blue jay was sighted in Highmarket. On
this day in 1948, NASCAR was officially incorporated with race promoter
Bill France as president. It’s been reported that NASCAR is now the
fastest growing spectator sport in America. A bald eagle made his
appearance this morning at the Boonville Transfer Site.
- FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22: Their family
and friends are sending happy 55th wedding anniversary wishes to Ed and
Mary Paluck of Boonville. Pat Malone of Ava celebrates his 80th birthday
today, and wife Janette says she’s taking him out to dinner tonight. The
Chevrolet division of General Motors held a celebration today in 1923,
as the one millionth car rolled off the assembly line. During the 1980
Olympics in Lake Placid, the underdog U.S. Hockey Team defeated the
Soviet Team on this date by a score of 4 to 3. Approximately 10,000
spectators cheered on the young American team, comprised of mostly
college players. Two days later they went on to defeat Finland to
capture a gold medal.
