George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of February 13th, 2006:
- MONDAY, FEBRUARY 13:
Congratulations to Mark and Chrissy VanNamee of Barneveld on the birth
yesterday of a daughter, Payton Erin. Chrissy is the daughter of George
and Donna Kline of Boonville. It was 1980 when the 13th Winter Olympics
opened in Lake Placid, and in 1988 the 15th Winter Olympics held their
opening ceremonies in Alberta, Canada. Here in the North Country we have
been watching our own North Country competitor from Remsen, Erin Hamlin,
as her luge run was scheduled for 4 p.m. today. Ford introduced the
first Thunderbird with seating for four in 1958. The car featured a 300
horsepower engine, and 38,000 were sold in its first year. America's
first and oldest public school, the Boston Latin School, opened today in
1635. Country music singing legend Waylon Jennings died on February 13,
2002, from diabetes, at the age of 64. The old pea picker, Tennessee
Ernie Ford, was born in 1919 in Fordtown, TN, and died of liver failure
in 1991. His song, ?Sixteen Tons,? was a number one song for 10 weeks
between 1955 and 1956.
- TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14: Happy 32nd
anniversary wishes to Don and Linda Satterly of Boonville, from their
family. This was a Tuesday morning in 1995 when a massive lake-effect
storm ended in Montague on Tug Hill. The storm started on a Friday and
dropped 60 inches of snow; 24 inches had fallen overnight, while Jackson
Hill in Boonville measured only 2.7 inches. Narrow bands of lake-effect
snow will sometimes bring incredible amounts in a short time. The
longtime host of ABC's "20-20" news show, Hugh Downs, is 85 today.
- WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15: You will
see a lot of them at the Winter Olympics this week, Canada's national
flag with an 11-point maple leaf in the center. The new-style flag was
raised for the first time in Ottawa in 1965. Celebrity birthdays
include: Harvey Korman from the Carol Burnett Show is 78; the "Simpsons'"
creator, Matt Groening is 51; and the country singer who gave us "Please
Help Me I'm Falling" in 1960, Hank Locklin, is 87 today. A tragic
accident occurred in 1961 when a Boeing 707 crashed in Belgium, killing
the 18-member U.S. figure-skating team headed for the Winter Olympics in
Czechoslovakia; 73 people lost their lives in the crash.
- THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 16: Will we be
blown away tonight? A high wind warning for winds possibly up to 65 mph
on Friday are expected. Arnie Miller and Tim Ervay watched a woodchuck
jump into his hole on the East Road near Turin this morning. Members of
all Elks Lodges, celebrate their founding today, originating in NY City
in 1868. The first 911 emergency telephone system was installed in 1968
in Hayleville, Alabama.
- FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17:
Congratulations to Corey and Donna Smith of Lowville on the birth of a
daughter, Tazi Jane, who came into the world at 2:38 a.m. Brett Sellers
and Heather Crofoot of Boonville will be married this evening at the
Boonville United Methodist Church, with best wishes from their families.
Geraldine Hastwell of Port Leyden celebrates her 91st birthday today.
Lillian Sampson, also of Port Leyden, counts up 87 candles on her cake,
and Clyde Whitford of Brantingham celebrates his 85th birthday. A
fast-moving cold front is passing through the North Country bringing
winds up to 46 mph at 8:41 a.m. The old barn next to Eli and Bev
Schindler's here on Route 12D collapsed from the high winds. Several
other buildings were also damaged. Newsweek magazine began publishing
in 1933.
