George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of February 6th, 2006:

  • MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6: Saturday was the halfway point of winter and featured a lot of sunshine, but this morning in Lowville, a heavy band of lake-effect snow arrived, with some reports measuring from 18 to 24 inches of fluffy snow, while here in Boonville the sun came out. America’s 40th President, Ronald Reagan, was born today in Tampico, Illinois, in 1911. Baseball legend Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1895, and died in New York in 1948. Longtime NBC News anchorman Tom Brokaw was born 66 years ago in Yankton, SD. Richie McDonald, lead singer of the country group “Lonestar,” is 44 today. Philadelphia native, “Fabian,” celebrates his 63rd birthday. Anyone from the 60s will remember “Tiger.” Dale Liddle of Forestport noticed that his pussy-willows opened up Saturday, much to his surprise.

  • TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7: My weather records indicate that a three-day snowstorm finally ended in 1972, which dropped 60 inches of snow on Jackson Hill. That band of lake-effect snow from Lake Ontario was only 10 to 15 miles wide, but carried quite a punch back then. It was this day in 1964 when the “Beatles” arrived in New York for their first visit to America and were greeted by 3,000 fans. Country music superstar Garth Brooks counts up 44 candles on his birthday cake today. He was born in Luba, Oklahoma, and raised in Yukon, Oklahoma. Author Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England, in 1812. He died in England in 1870.

  • WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8: Snowmobile trailers are going north and sledders will find 22 inches on the ground near the Rector Road. In comparison, Merry Hill is measuring 4 inches and 3 inches here at the Station. My weather books indicate that 65 inches was on the ground on Jackson Hill in 1978. In 1972, Boonville was preparing for the NYS Championship Snowmobile Races on the fairgrounds, with over 400 entries in the modified races, and total entries expected to reach 800. the village was crowded with people. One-time ABC news anchor Ted Koppel is 66, comedian Robert Klein is 64, and country singer Dan Seals is 58.

  • THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9: Happy 82nd birthday wishes to Gerald Conover of Boonville from all his friends. A busy morning here at the Station, with 32 phone calls answered, and mostly all birthdays. There were over 100 snowmobile trailers headed for Tug Hill. A lake-effect snow warning is in effect with 3 to 6 inches expected. One of the first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Bill Haley, died on this day of a heart attack in 1981, at a young age of 56. He sold nearly 60 million records and will always be remembered for “Rock Around the Clock” and “See You Later Alligator.” Singer-songwriter Carole King was born in Brooklyn 64 years ago. Country singer Travis Tritt, a native of Marietta, Georgia, is 43 today. Country music legend Ernst Tubb was born in Crisp, Texas, in 1914, and died of emphysema at the age of 70 in 1984. My late uncle, Jim Urtz of West Branch, was in World War II with Ernest and they were good friends. Stuart Dunn of the East Road in Boonville watched a red-wing blackbird in his bird feeder this morning. The bird must have had a poor spell to be up here this early!

  • FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10: Happy 56th wedding anniversary wishes to Dick and Arletha Bellinger of Route 177, from their family. Tomorrow, Richard and Sandy Bush of Lowville celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary, with best wishes from their family and friends. In 1979, it was Boonville Snow Festival weekend with big crowds for the NYS Snowmobile Championship Races, despite the 37-below zero temperature that morning. Coffee froze in the cups that day. In 1985, the Jackson Hill Weather Station reported 41 consecutive days below the freezing mark. Fuel bills must have been high that year. Former Olympic gold medal swimmer Mark Spitz is 56 years old today. He was recognized one summer swimming in Lake Placid. Congratulations to Boonville’s Paul Hance on bowling a 703 series at the Boonville Bowl-O-Rama Thursday night.
