George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of February 4th, 2008:

they report a higher than normal amount of deer on the trails. Two were
hit and killed on the new Port Leyden trail this weekend by
snowmobilers, so be very careful. In automotive history, Ford Motor
Company purchased the Lincoln Motor Company for $8 million in 1922.

of a daughter, Olivia Mildred Young, from their families and friends.

Today is the 56th anniversary of the first “Don’t Walk Sign” which was
installed in New York City. Boonville summer resident John Gilbert
called from north of Tampa, Florida, this morning that the robins
arrived yesterday, which is earlier than normal.
- WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6: Today was
another disruptive weather day with wet snow and sleet, causing six
school closings, from Adirondack to Carthage. A flood warning was issued
for Oneida and Herkimer counties. On the brighter side, two robins were
spotted this morning on the Stuckie Road, just north of the radio
station. One of the “Golden Boys of Bandstand,” singer Fabian, was born
in Philadelphia, PA, 65 years ago. Our 40th President, Ronald Reagan,

from Boonville, and friends and family send their best wishes. Sadly,
Lewis County lost one of its oldest residents yesterday morning. Mildred
S. Reape, 105, passed away at the Lewis County Extended Care Facility,
Lowville. She had lived alone at her home on Lanphear Street in Lowville
until she broke her ankle, requiring her to move to the facility in
September 2007. Country singer Garth Brooks was born in Luba, OK, 46
years ago. With 3,000 screaming fans waiting, the Beatles arrived in
America for the first time at New York’s Kennedy Airport in 1964. Two
days later they made their first TV appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.
It was estimated that 40 percent of the U.S. population, or 73 million
views watched them perform. With a sign of relief, a three-day snowstorm
ended in 1972, after dumping 50 inches of snow on us, with a measurement
of 60 inches of snow in the woods on Jackson Hill. That storm was a
challenge for snowplow drivers and residents of Boonville who had to
move the snow.

date, 800 race entries were in, with over 400 in the modified division
alone. There were more entries than the World Series of Snowmobiling. On
February 9, 1973, the speed trials were run at the Boonville Airport,
with a huge turnout of spectators as part of the NYS Championship
Snowmobile Races, and an attempt to break the world speed record. There
were clear skies and 7 degrees below zero temperatures.
