George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of January 30th, 2006:

  • MONDAY, JANUARY 30: A warm weekend with 1 inch of rain yesterday dropped the snow level on Merry Hill to 2 inches. This is the least amount of snow I can find in my weather records, which date back to 1972. Yesterday, Bob and Gloria Dosztan of Watson celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary with best wishes from Joanna, Randy, Dustin, Kara, and Dale. Chevrolet and DeSoto produced their last cars today in 1942. The factories then switched over to produce military equipment for the World War II effort. The ?Beatles? performed for the last time together on a rooftop over their London recording studio in 1969. If you can remember the TV series, ?Laugh-In,? Dick Martin, a native of Detroit, was born 84 years ago. Yesterday, Oprah Winfrey celebrated her 52nd birthday, born in Kosciusko, MS. U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, 65 years ago.

  • TUESDAY, JANUARY 31: In 1988, it was spring-like with 51-degree temperatures. Two rabbit hunters, Ed and Gary of Boonville, saw a snake sunning itself in a spring hole on Merry Hill in Boonville. In 1991, five snowmobilers, including myself, went on a snowmobile ride from Boonville to Woodhull Lake near McKeever, and encountered heavy snow. We made it back with no problems, and by tomorrow morning, the new snow measured 25 inches. Two baseball Hall-of-Famers celebrate their birthdays today. Ernie Banks is 75 and Nolan Ryan is 59. Richard Fuller celebrated his 80th birthday yesterday, with best wishes from his family and friends in the North Country.

  • WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1: It's not a full moon yet, but two new arrivals were welcomed. First, congratulations to Jody and Brittany Kirk of Port Leyden on the birth of a son, Brent Allen Jr. at 7:11 p.m. last evening. Also, a daughter, Macy Lynn, was born to Todd and Jessica Fowler of Lowville at 7:31 p.m. last evening. Today, Jim and Betty Conley of Boonville celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary, and Lyle and Norma Robbins of the East Martinsburg Road celebrate their 53rd anniversary. Yesterday, George Ingersoll of Martinsburg celebrated his 81st birthday, with love from Joanna, Randy, Dustin, Kara, and Dale. In 1898, the very first automobile insurance was issued b the Travelers Insurance Company to Dr. Martin of Buffalo, NY, at a cost of $11.25. This evening in 2003 was not a good luck period of time. The roof at Freddy's on Ford Street collapsed at 10 p.m. and at about the same time, the newly constructed wooden walk-way bridge by the Feeder Canal also caved in.

  • THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2: Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog, saw his shadow for the 96th time since records have been kept, with only 14 years that he didn?t. Congratulations to Jamie and Brandy Sullivan of Port Leyden on the birth yesterday of a daughter, Breeann. Gramma and the Sullivans are proud of their new granddaughter. Weather experts report that this is the third warmest winter since records have been collected. My records at the station go back to 1972 with this year?s snow measurement of 2 inches being the least. Celebrity birthdays include comedian Tommy Smothers is 69. Farrah Fawcett is 59, and country singer Howard Bellamy of the Bellamy Bros. is 60.

  • FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3: Congratulations to Donny and Heather Carbone of Boonville on the birth Tuesday of a daughter Ceceria, who joins a brother at home. Many well owners have been concerned because of the lack of snowpack this winter, fearing that the water tables will be low in the future months. According to hydrologists from the National Weather Service, we shouldn?t worry, as the warmer temperatures prevented heavy frost and water has been absorbed adding to the grand water levels, and we should be in good shape. Too well-known comedians celebrate their birthdays today, Joey Bishop is 88, and Shelley Breman is 80. Football hall-of-famer Fran Tarkenton was born in Richmond, VA, 66 years ago. The ?Day the Music Died? is a description of this day in 1959, when three top singers were killed in a plane crash in a cornfield near Mason City, Iowa. Lost were Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper.
