George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 29th, 2007:
- MONDAY, JANUARY 29: Tug Hill
snows have brought a lot of visitors to enjoy the trails. Unfortunately,
five accidents made the news, but fortunately there were no fatalities.
It sounds like common-sense isn’t being observed in most cases. Mercer’s
Dairy Store held their open house Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and
report over 500 people stopped in for the tour and samples. This was a
much larger turnout than anticipated, and was a huge success. The first
members of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown were named in 1936,
including Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Matthewson, and
Walter Johnson. Yesterday afternoon, the Boonville Kiwanis Club offered
ice skating on the Boonville Fairgrounds ice track, and Daryl Marcy
reported close to 75 skaters turned out for a great time.
- TUESDAY, JANUARY 30: Andy
Maciejko of Lyons Falls watched a flock of about a hundred geese flying
south over his barn at 7 p.m. last evening. It makes you wonder where
they were all this time! In the past 35 years, weather records show the
most snow on the ground at the Jackson Hill Weather Station was 55
inches in 1978 and the least, one year ago with 2 inches. Former co-star
of TV’s “Laugh-In,” Dick Martin, a native of Detroit, Michigan,
celebrates his 85th birthday. U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney is 66
today. He is a native of Lincoln, Nebraska.
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31: How
nervous should we get? The forecast has a lake-effect snow warning with
up to 18 inches possible over Tug Hill and 4 to 8 inches in other areas.
We’ll know by morning. Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan was born in
Refugio, Texas, 60 years ago. Actress Carol Channing, a native of
Seattle, Washington, is 86 today. Five snowmobilers from BoonvIlle,
including myself, rode to Woodhull Lake near McKeever in 1991 and ended
up in a heavy snowstorm. Andy Seelman, Pete Belyea, Kenny Pond, Harold
Haig, and I rode back safely, and 25 inches of snow was measured the
next morning as the storm passed by.
- THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1: Happy
anniversary wishes go out to Jim and Betty Conley of Boonville on their
60th, with best wishes from friends, Dave and Donna. Russ and Janice
Pfendler of Forestport celebrate their 43rd anniversary today, from
Dawn, Matt and the grandchildren. Bands of lake-effect snow piled up to
30 inches on Gomer Hill yesterday, while the Merry Hill Weather Station
measured only 2 inches. Folklore dictates that today is St. Bridget’s
Day. Snow on this day means full ditches in the spring. Four years ago
was a bad luck night in Boonville. First, the roof of the Post House,
now Freddy’s Diner, collapsed about 10 p.m. and shortly after, the newly
constructed Canal Walkway bridge also went down. Thankfully both were
repaired or replaced and are used today.
- FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2: Out of the
last 17 years, groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow 13 times, and
this morning he didn’t see his shadow, which foretells an early spring.
The German tradition has continued since 1887 and has gained national
attention for the town of 6,100 residents, which is located 65 miles
northeast of Pittsburgh, PA. Country singer Howard Bellamy of the
Bellamy Brothers was born in Darby, Florida, 61 years ago. Model
Christie Brinkley, onetime wife of singer Billy Joel, was born in
Monroe, Wisconsin, and is 53 today. She was one of the original members
of the TV series, “Charlie’s Angels,” Farrah Fawcett, was born in Corpus
Christi, Texas, 60 years ago. Comedian Tom Smothers, of the Smothers
Brothers, is 70 today. He is a native of New York City.
