George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of January 28th, 2008:

  • MONDAY, JANUARY 28: Mother Nature cooperated to bring ideal weather conditions for the Snow Festival held this past weekend, with a high temperature of 29 degrees in the village. Volunteers reported they had to find parking space for an estimated 500 snowmobilers who rode in to watch the races. There were close to 200 sleds in the lineup for the Friday night torchlight parade, with an impressive fireworks display held at the race track after the parade. Sadly, we remember this morning in 1986 when the Space Shuttle Challenger blew up after 73 seconds of flight, killing all seven astronauts. In 1887, snowflakes the size of milk pans fell across several miles of Montana. Some were measured 15 inches across and 18 inches thick. Nothing close to that has been measured since.

  • TUESDAY, JANUARY 29: Congratulations to Mike and Jodi Dolan of Turin on the birth yesterday of a daughter, Rachel Lynn, with best wishes from their families and friends. Also, Ray and Chris Williams of Carthage have a new daughter, Ayden Elizabeth Fay Williams, born yesterday in Watertown. Congratulations from Aunt P.J. and Uncle Tracy. Marie Burnham of Glenfield celebrates with 80 candles on her birthday cake, with best wishes from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Baseball lovers might like to know that the U.S. Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown elected their first members in 1936. The Hall of Fame has over 350,000 visitors each year. Talk show host Oprah Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, MS, 54 years ago today.

  • WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30: A strong cold front entered the area this morning. The temperature dropped from 38 to 25 in one hour, with snow and wind causing the visibility to drop to a quarter of a mile at 8:30 a.m. At 8:25 a.m., several claps of thunder were reported. Area schools were dismissed early due to the windy conditions. Happy 24th anniversary wishes go out to Fred and Joellen Fox of Talcottville from their family and friends. The Beatles made their last public performance on a rooftop in London in 1969. The comedian co-star of TV’s Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In, Dick Martin, was born in Detroit, MI, 86 years ago today. U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, a native of Lincoln, NE, is 67 today. Because of the World War II conflict, the last Chevy and DeSoto cars were produced today in 1942. Auto makers then re-tooled to build military gear.

  • THURSDAY, JANUARY 31: Yesterday’s lake-effect storm involved a peak wind gust of 62 mph at 9:27 a.m. at Rick Beyer’s home on the Rector Road, and 34 mph here at the station at 11:44 a.m. The heavy snowfall never reached Boonville, as only a half-inch was measured at the Merry Hill Weather Station. Today, Bob and Helen Cataldo of Lyons Falls celebrate their 55th anniversary, with best wishes from friends and family. While on a snowmobile trip to Woodhull Lake in 1991, our group encountered heavy snowfall, and by morning 25 inches was measured at the Weather Station. On that trip were Andy Seelman, Kenny Pond, Harold Haig, Pete Belyea, and myself. Baseball Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia, in 1919, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1962. He died on October 24, 1972.

  • FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1: Happy 44th anniversary wishes to Russ and Janice Pfendler of Boonville, from Dawn, Matt and family. Martha Lovenduski of Lowville celebrates her 88th birthday, with best wishes from her niece. On this morning in 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia exploded at 9:16 a.m., killing all seven crew members. It was this evening in 2003 when the Post House roof on Ford Street collapsed, and at about the same time, the wooden walkway bridge over the Feeder Canal near Route 12 also collapsed under snow weight. Weather extremes for today show a high temperature of 47 degrees in 1989 and a low temperature of 25 degrees below zero here at the station in 1976.
