George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 22nd, 2007:
- MONDAY, JANUARY 22: Happy 41st
anniversary wishes to Glen and Sharon Sweeney of the Carthage Road from
family and friends. As of Saturday evening, about 7 inches of ice has
been built on the racetrack on the Boonville Fairgrounds, in preparation
of the snowmobile races. Folklore says today is St. Vincent’s Day. If
the sun shines today, a good wine crop will be found next season. The
Boonville area was hit with a huge ice storm on last night’s date in
1997. Schools and roads were closed. The only way I could get to the
radio station was by snowmobile, riding the trail north of Boonville,
which was groomed just before the freezing rain arrived. Singer Glen
Campbell was awarded a gold record, his first, for “Wichita Lineman” in
1969. He received three more during his career. It was 1968 when NBC
aired the first episode of the comedy, Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. The
show continued for five years.
- TUESDAY, JANUARY 23: Happy 86th
birthday wishes to Elizabeth Benedict of Boonville from her six children
and their families. Dave and Marlene Pritchard of Boonville celebrate
their 42nd anniversary today, with best wishes from their family and
friends. Longtime talk show host Johnny Carson died two years ago today
in Malibu, California, at age 79. He had entertained for 30 years on the
Tonight Show and was retired for 13 years.
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24:
Congratulations to Frank and Nancy Abel of the Smith Road near
Hawkinsville on the birth yesterday of a daughter, Mallory Rae. She
weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 19 inches long. The Boonville Snow
Festival II committee reports that ice on the racetrack is up to 9
inches accumulation of ice and is building up nicely. Anyone interested
in a snowman and ice sculpture entry should call the Boonville Chamber
office at 942-5112 to be judged. Singer-songwriter Neil Diamond, a
native of Brooklyn, celebrates his 66th birthday today. Mary Lou Retton,
an Olympic gold-medal gymnast, is 39 today.
- THURSDAY, JANUARY 25: The
racetrack ice building crew reports great progress this week with below
zero temperatures. They also express their appreciation to the Boonville
Police Officers, who realized how cold it was and brought up cups of
steaming hot coffee while on patrol the other night. Here at the radio
station, the temperature dropped to minus 6 degrees at 12:22 a.m. and a
windchill of 33 below. Happy 84th birthday to Edward Morak of Watson
from son Dan. Strange, but true, two flocks of geese flew south over the
radio station in 2002, and Dale Liddle of Forestport heard geese flying
over the village at 8 p.m. last evening. Historically, the first Winter
Olympics started today in 1924 at Chamonix in the French Alps.
- FRIDAY, JANUARY 26: Happy 50th
wedding anniversary wishes to Ed and Liz Berger of Boonville, from their
family and friends. The country’s arctic air cold snap brought our
temperatures down to 15 below zero at the radio station. It was at 9:20
p.m. this evening in 1994 when the roof of the Boonville Bowl-A-Rama
collapsed, with no injuries. Thankfully, the structure was rebuilt. The
Dukes of Hazzard TV series premiered this evening in 1979, and continued
on the air for seven seasons and is still running in syndication. The
Lincoln Motor Car Company was founded today in 1920, and two years later
was acquired by Ford Motor Company.
