George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 16th, 2006:
- MONDAY, JANUARY 16: Minus 5 is
what we found for the overnight low temperature here at the station. A
wind-chill of minus 49 registered at 9:25 a.m. yesterday morning, and we
had a 28 mph wind at 10:42 a.m. Happy Birthday to Kenny Wood of Rome,
who celebrates his 90th today, from wife and friends at Sears Oil of
Rome. Country singer Ronnie Milsap was born 60 years ago in
Robbinsville, North Carolina. His age is disputed, as some sources say
he's 63. The first production line Corvette was introduced at a car show
in New York in 1953. After 14 years, the last "Bonanza" TV show aired
tonight in 1973, and can still be seen on the TV Land cable show. It was
yesterday's date, January 15, 1957, when Boonville made the nation's
news, when 55 below zero was recorded at the radio station.
- TUESDAY, JANUARY 17: Happy 47th
wedding anniversary wishes to Dick and Karen Charbonneau of Boonville,
from Anne, Dana, Erika and Lexie. A heavy snowfall started today in 1992
and by tomorrow morning, 24 inches was collected on Jackson Hill here in
Boonville. The man credited with developing the flush toilet, Thomas
Crapper, died today in 1910. He was a native of Thorpe, Yorkshire,
England. Former boxing champion Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville,
Kentucky, 64 years ago. The oldest signer of the Declaration of
Independence and Constitution, Benjamin Franklin, was born in Boston in
1706 and died in Boston in 1790.
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18: An immense
ice storm arrived overnight in the North Country, with a 1/2 to 3/4-inch
coating everything. Power to about 7,000 electric customers in the
Lowville area was lost from about 7:25 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. All schools
from Holland Patent to Lowville were closed. A huge lake-effect
snowstorm arrived in Northern New York in 1994. Adams measured 36 inches
of snow in nine hours, and Lowville measured 25 inches, with 65 inches
found on the ground. Strangely, Boonville had sunny skies and escaped
the heavy snow. Happy 65th birthday to singer Bobby Goldsboro whose
biggest song, "Honey," in the '60s, was born in Marianne, Florida.
- THURSDAY, JANUARY 19:
Congratulations to Tim and Lisa Munn of Lyons Falls on the birth this
morning of a daughter, Marina Grace, who joins two sisters at home.
Also, Lucas and Chris Szablewski welcome a son, Eric Steven, to their
family. My two-day total of precipitation, including rain and melted
snow, added up to 2.15 inches. Snowmobilers are warned that Stillwater
Reservoir may rise 2 to 3 feet because of the increasing water input.
This sometimes will cause the ice to break, creating some sizable
shelves, which can be very dangerous. Be on the watch. Rick Beyer, the
Rector Road weather reporter, observed blue-lightning at 7:30 p.m. last
evening and also reported a 53 mph wind gust at 5:04 p.m., and Bub
Morczek, our Highmarket weatherman, measured 9.4 inches of new snow.
Weather extremes include no snow on the ground on Jackson Hill in 1995,
but found 65 inches on the ground in the woods in 1978. She's been in
Boonville twice and is celebrating her 60th birthday. We wish country
music singer Dolly Parton a happy birthday. She was born in Sevier
County, Tennessee, in 1946.
- FRIDAY, January 20:
Congratulations to Ron Weaver and Shannon Schuler of Potato Hill in
Boonville on the birth yesterday of triplets, two boys and one girl,
with best wishes form Neil and Amy Grenier. A listener spotted a bald
eagle flying over the Alder Creek Golf Course this morning. There were a
pair of eagles seen on the River Road out of Boonville two days ago. One
of country music's best yodeler, Slim Whitman, was born in Tampa,
Florida, 82 years ago. He had 3 million sellers and 37 songs on the
charts. Soul singer Wilson Pickett, a native of Prattville, Alabama,
died yesterday of a heart attack, at age 64.
