George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 15th, 2007:
- MONDAY, JANUARY 15: Freezing rain
greets the North Country this morning with salt trucks and sanders busy
in all areas. A winter storm warning is in effect through the evening.
The actor who portrayed the Scarecrow in the “Wizard of Oz” movie
classic, Ray Bolger, died in 1987 in Los Angeles, at age 83. The TV
series, “Happy Days,” aired its first episode in 1974 and continued for
10 years. Ritchie, Potsie, and The Fonz became household names during
those fun-filled days of life during their Milwaukee High School years.
This day in Boonville is still in the record books as having one of the
coldest temperatures in New York State. A low temperature of 55 below
zero was recorded in 1957. Schools were closed, as buildings couldn’t
retain heat and buses wouldn’t start. As a kid, we found it was too cold
to play outside. A massive power outage somewhere on the National Grid
circuit put everything on hold starting at 10:10 a.m. this morning, as
icing weighed down power lines and tree limbs. Power was restored here
at 12:28 p.m.
- TUESDAY, JANUARY 16: Yesterday’s
storm warning brought 1.3 inches of rain, and then a low temperature of
10 degrees this morning at the radio station and only 1 inch of new snow
at the Merry Hill Weather Station. Five years ago, a moose was spotted
near West Leyden. It could have been the one that groomer drivers from
the Lost Trail Snowmobile Club watched on the Zeigler Road. Weather
records indicate that there was no snow in the village in 1995, but
there was 55 inches on the ground at the Jackson Hill Weather Station in
1978, which was the year of the second highest snowfall, 318 inches.
Country music singer Ronnie Milsap, a native of Robbinsville, North
Carolina, is 64 today. The TV western “Bonanza” was cancelled in 1973
after 14 seasons on NBC.
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17: We were
greeted with a minus 9 temperature at the radio station this morning,
with a minus 16 at Highmarket. At 4:31 a.m. this morning in 1994, the
Northridge earthquake rattled Los Angeles, California, killing 54 people
and causing billions of dollars in damages. The first Volkswagen Bug
arrived in America from Germany in 1949. Former boxing champ, Muhammad
Ali, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, celebrates his 65th birthday
today. Former baseball player and manager, Don Zimmer, was born in
Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1931.
- THURSDAY, JANUARY 18: Happy 32nd
wedding anniversary to John and Ellen Sullivan of Port Leyden, from
their family and six grandchildren. Progress is being made building an
ice base on the track at the Boonville Fairgrounds in preparation of the
snowmobile races, February 3 and 4. Singer-songwriter Bobby Goldsboro, a
native of Marianna, Florida, is 66 today. His song, “Honey,” topped all
the charts in 1968 and earned him a gold record. His career produced
over two-dozen hit songs.
- FRIDAY, JANUARY 19: Charles and
Annette Hammond of Boonville celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary,
with love and best wishes from Randy, Renee, Shannon and Shawna. Kelly
and Susie send 50th anniversary wishes to Harold and Jeanie O’Brien of
Lowville. Triplets, Faith, James and Michael Weaver, celebrate their 1st
birthday today, with happy birthday wishes from Mommy and Daddy, and the
rest of the family. Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers was born in
Chicago in 1939. She has performed twice at the Boonville-Oneida County
Fair and celebrates her 61st birthday today. Dolly Parton was born in
Sevierville, Tennessee, in 1946. Actress Jean Stapleton, who co-started
in the TV series, “All In The Family,” as Archie Bunker’s wife, is 84
today.
