George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of January 14th, 2008:

  • MONDAY, JANUARY 14: We finally have some measurable snow at the Merry Hill Weather Station with 2 inches found this morning. The last snowfall measured was on January 2, with 5.9 inches. Total snowfall as of today is 66.5 inches. We send 100th birthday wishes to Evelyn Jackson of Lowville. She had a birthday party yesterday, with best wishes from the Berrus family. “60 Minutes” commentator Andy Rooney was born in Albany, NY, 89 years ago.

  • TUESDAY, JANUARY 15: Today Pastor Joe and Georgiana Feller of the Boonville Baptist Church observe their wedding anniversary, with congratulations from their friends. Happy 53rd anniversary to Joe Laveck of Watson from wife Margaret. Happy birthday to Bob Croniser of Locust Grove, celebrating his 79th today, from wife Sally and family. It was a bone-chilling morning in 1957 when the temperature at the radio station was recorded as minus 55 degrees. Boonville High School was closed, as busses wouldn’t start, and the building was too cold to hold classes. On the other hand, Boonville’s warmest day on this date was 57 degrees in 1995 with no snow on the ground. The first “Happy Days” TV series was broadcast tonight in 1974 and continued for 10 seasons. Ritchie, Potsie, and The Fonz are fondly remembered for their roles. the popular show stayed in the top 20 ratings for seven of its 10 years.

  • WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16: Ray Campany of Beaver Falls celebrates his 90th birthday, with best wishes from his neighbors. Baseball Hall of Famer Dizzy Dean was born in Lucas, Arkansas, in 1911. After his baseball career, he became a colorful sports announcer. He died in Reno, Nevada, on July 17, 1974. A new car, the Chevrolet Corvette, was introduced at a car show in New York in 1953 and became an instant classic. The cars are still built today at Bowling Green, Kentucky. Country music singer Eric Church, who performed at the Lewis County Fair last summer, married music publisher Katherine Blasingame on January 8 at Blowing Rock, NC.

  • THURSDAY, JANUARY 17: Ben and Shirley Baxter of Boonville celebrate their 20-plus anniversary today, with happy wishes from Morgan, Ryan, Mason and Wyatt. Four years ago, a bald eagle arrived at the Boonville Transfer Site and stayed around for about 10 minutes. Betty White, one of TV’s “Golden Girls,” was born in Oak Park, Illinois, 86 years ago. Former boxer Muhammad Ali, a native of Louisville, KY, was born in 1942.

  • FRIDAY, JANUARY 18: In the village and here at the station, I measured 2-3/4 inches of snow at 4:10 a.m. this morning and another 1/2 inch was added by 8 a.m. the snow passed by and the sun broke through by 8:15 a.m. Boonville’s maximum snow cover was 65 inches in the woods in 1978, but only a trace in 1995. Boonville’s all-time high temperature for today was 49 degrees in 1973 and was 32 below zero in 1976 here at the station. The Lost Trail snowmobile Club of Boonville will hold their Poker run tomorrow, ending at the Boonville Elks Lodge, now that the area has adequate snow cover on the trails. Singer Bobby Goldsboro was born in Marianna, Florida, 67 years ago. His huge hit song, “Honey” earned him a gold record in 1968, and it is considered a classic love song.
