George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 9th, 2006:
- MONDAY, JANUARY 9: Happy 46th
anniversary wishes to Richard and Jacky Kaban of Lowville, from Dick,
Sandy, and all of the Bush family. Spencer Meiss of Constableville
counts up 87 candles on his birthday cake, with best wishes from Muriel
and the family. Our 36th President, Richard Nixon, was born at Yorba
Linda, California, in 1913. Folk singer Joan Baez was born in Staten
Island, New York, 65 years ago. Country singer Crystal Gayle was born in
Paintsville, KY, in 1951, and is a sister of Loretta Lynn. Rock singer
Dave Mathews is 39 today.
- TUESDAY, JANUARY 10: There’s a
full moon Saturday night, and babies are arriving this week on schedule.
First of all, congratulations to Greg and Kelly Schaffner of the
Boonville Great American on a baby daughter, Jenna Lynn, born last
evening. Also, former Boonville resident Scott Ludwikowski and wife
Heather welcomed a daughter, Grace Ann, to the family in Bristol,
Virginia, last evening, and a son, Austin, was born last evening to
Dennis and Dorothy Hungerford of Turin. Entertainers’ birthdays today
include: Scott McKenzie, best known for his song, “San Francisco, Wear
Some Flowers in Your Hair,” is 67 today, born in Jacksonville, FL; Frank
Sinatra Jr. is 62; singer Rod Stewart is 61; and former boxer George
Foreman was born in Marshall, Texas, 57 years ago. In 1996, a 1963
Volkswagon Beetle set a new car mileage record with 1,592,503 miles and
was owned by Albert Klein of Pasadena, California.
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11: Strong
icing arrived overnight, causing school delays at Adirondack Central and
the Town of Webb Schools in Old Forge. South Lewis School closed for the
day. Several plows slid off the road in the Gorge Road corners, on Route
46, and walking will be treacherous for a time. On this morning in 2003,
I was measuring 2 inches of snow per hour, with 10 inches on the ground
by 9 a.m. On the other hand, the Jackson Hill Weather Station only had a
trace of snow on the ground in 1980. Country singer Naomi Judd was born
in Ashland, Kentucky, 60 years ago. Golfer Ben Crenshaw was born in
Austin, Texas, and celebrates his 54th birthday today.
- THURSDAY, JANUARY 12: In 1997, we
were seeing the results of a four-day lake-effect snow squall, centered
over the Tug Hill Plateau. Montague added up 77 inches in 24 hours.
Several Boonville snowmobilers were stranded at the Montague Inn
overnight when their sleds were unable to ride through the fluff. There
were 40-50 campers and residents caught in the storm. The Valley Snow
Travelers Snowmobile Club brought up their big trail groomer to drive
down the roads and trails, which allowed the snowmobilers to escape the
deep snow. Osceola and Redfield had 90 inches of snowfall from that
storm. The Jackson Hill Weather Station in Boonville measured 47.1
inches of snow from January 10-15 of the same time period.
- FRIDAY, JANUARY 13: Black ice was
found on many highways this morning, including Route 12 south and Route
294 with vehicles off the road. Route 3 near Carthage had to be closed
until salters and sanders could remove the problem ice. In 1942, Henry
Ford received a patent for a plastic bodied car. I have never seen one
and am not sure if any were ever produced. It wasn’t until the Saturn
arrived on the car scene that a plastic type body was mass produced,
which has been very successful, because they don’t rust or dent. Country
singer Trace Adkins was born 44 years ago in Springhill, Louisiana. He
currently has a hot top 5 single, “Honkytonk Badonkadonk.” George
Capron’s show can be heard Monday through Saturday from 6-9 a.m. and
from 12-1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Capron, a lifelong resident of
Boonville, joined the local radio station on April Fools Day, 1964.
