George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of January 8th, 2007:

  • MONDAY, JANUARY 8: Another high temperature was broken Saturday with a high of 53 degrees, breaking the old record of 48 degrees from 1998. Some gardeners report spring bulbs are starting to show growth in the area, due to the warmth. Happy birthday to Eddie Markowski of Lowville on his 90th birthday, from friends and family. Congratulations to both the Toepath Trekkers of Boonville and the Roman Runners of Rome who took part in a marathon at Disney World in Florida this past weekend. They all received a “Goofy” medallion for competing. Donna Salmon said it was 89 degrees at the finish line on Sunday.

  • TUESDAY, JANUARY 9: Happy 88th birthday wishes to Spencer Meiss of Constableville from Muriel and family in Lowville. Helen Charbonneau of Boonville has to blow out 84 candles on her birthday cake, with best wishes from her family. I was happy to report 3-1/2 inches of snow here at the radio station, finally turning the lawn white. Highmarket measured 8-1/2 inches. By noon today, Snow Ridge in Turin had accumulated 16 inches of snow from a lake-effect snow band. Driving was a problem, with visibility down to zero at times. There was a report of a snowplow off the road on the Osceola Road.

  • WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10: Snowmobilers have discovered snow. I would guess over 30 travelers have gone by the station by 9 a.m. headed for Tug Hill, where 14 inches of snow, on the average, can be found. Donna Benedict of Turin said her daughter Tracy, who lives in Fairbanks, Alaska, reported it was 42 degrees below zero there yesterday morning. Rubber tires had flat spots until the tires warmed up. Yesterday the National Climatic Data Center reported that 2006 was the warmest on record since records have been kept starting in 1880. Singer Rod Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland, 62 years ago today, and Pat Benatar, a native of Brooklyn, is 54.

  • THURSDAY, JANUARY 11: The parishioners of St. Mary’s Church in Constableville and St. Mary’s Nativity Church in West Leyden, would like to wish Father Marullo a happy birthday today. In weather history, it was minus 29 degrees at our studios in 1979 and a high of 47 degrees was enjoyed today in 1980. 45 inches of snow was found on the ground in 1977. In 2003, a band of lake-effect snow was falling at the rate of 2 inches per hour. From 5 to 9 a.m., 10 inches of snow was measured. By the next morning, 20 inches was the 24-hour snowfall. Golfer Ben Crenshaw was born in Houston, Texas, and celebrates his 55th birthday. Naomi Judd, formerly of the country duo The Judds, is 61 and is a native of Ashland, Kentucky.

  • FRIDAY, JANUARY 12: Did anyone notice the bright glow toward the west the past couple of evenings? The Comet McNaught has been visible and experts say it’s the brightest comet in 30 years, bright enough to see in daylight. Today, Fred and Carol Finster of Lee Center celebrate their 52nd anniversary, and Kermit and Joyce Klingbail of West Leyden celebrate their 50th, with best wishes from their friends and family. On today’s date in 1997, six Boonville snowmobilers found themselves stranded for the night at the Montague Inn during one of the heaviest lake-effect snow storms in New York State history. the four-day storm dropped 77 inches of snow in 24 hours, and 95 inches for the storm total. Boonville picked up 47.1 inches from that storm. The Tug Hill snow total was thought to break a U.S. record, but on May 2, 1997, the record was denied, citing improperly kept records, according to the National Weather Service. Montague’s 77-inch, 24-hour total would have surpassed Silver Lake, Colorado’s 76 inches measured in 1921. Country singer Ray Price, a native of Perryville, Texas, is 81 today and is still singing.
