George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 2nd, 2008:
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2: I’m back
from vacation and all rested up after the holidays. The snowmobile
trails should be near perfect, with 7 inches of new snow yesterday and
lighter than normal traffic. After snow-blowing the driveway, I pulled
out the barbecue grill and cooked burgers for supper last evening for a
winter treat. Bird feeders should be checked often now that natural food
is buried. Happy 55th anniversary wishes to Milton and Helen Williamson
of Constableville from his seven sisters, two brothers, and nieces and
nephews.
- THURSDAY, JANUARY 3: We found a
cold morning in the North Country with a low temperature of minus 15
degrees at 7:44 a.m. here at the radio station. I had a minus 22 degrees
reported on the Brewery Road in Croghan. Happy birthday wishes to
Catherine Monnat of the Artz Road in New Bremen, who celebrates her
101st birthday, from son Chib, Dorothy, and family. Theda Montgomery of
Boonville celebrates her 88th birthday, with best wishes from her two
sons and her daughter. Last year on this morning, a moose was spotted
between the Rector and Flat Rock Road. In automotive history, General
Motors introduced the Pontiac car name in 1926. In 1959, Alaska became
our largest and 49th state.
- FRIDAY, JANUARY 4: Happy 45th
anniversary wishes to Mike and Roxy Higby of Mohawk Hill on Saturday,
from their family and friends. A large cold front engulfed the Northeast
in 1981, resulting in record cold temperatures. The Jackson Hill Weather
Station in Boonville recorded minus 31 degrees, with Old Forge reporting
minus 42. On this morning in 1988, 15.5 inches of new snow was measured
in Boonville and the snowfall continued, and by the next day another 21
inches was found. Highmarket totaled 47.5 inches of snow in 24 hours and
a two-day total of 69.3 inches. Up to that point, the season’s snowfall
was 157.1 inches. This year their total is 72.1 inches.
