George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of January 2nd, 2007:

  • TUESDAY, JANUARY 2: Back from vacation and there’s just a trace of snow on the ground. Two years ago, the same conditions were found. Congratulations to John Cullings and Cheyenne Farr of Port Leyden on the birth this morning of a son, James Steven Cullings, with best wishes from both families. Kevin and Lisa Kornmeyer of Boonville have a new son, Jonathan Hunter, born on Friday, December 29. Saturday morning in the village brought snow-covered ground and a large red male cardinal was in our backyard feeding off birdseed that had fallen from one of our feeders. We couldn’t see the female. In car news, Chrysler Corporation introduced a new car called the “Neon” in 2000.

  • WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3: Congratulations to Art and Mary Miller of Boonville on the arrival this morning of a baby daughter, Claire Isabelle, with best wishes from Mike, Angie and Eric Miller. Catherine Monnat of Beaver Falls celebrates her 100th birthday today, with wishes for many more from son Chib, Dorothy, and family. A robin was spotted on the Number Four Road this morning, huddled near the base of a tree. I wonder what they eat at this time of the year. General Motors introduced the Pontiac named cars in 1926. Cartoonist Charles Schulz, creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip announced his retirement today in 2000 and produced his last daily comic strip. His last Sunday “Peanuts” comic strip was published the day after his death on February 13, 2000. Grand Ole Opry singer Del Reeves died Monday at his home in Centerville, TN, at the age of 73. He had a number one song, “Girl on the Billboard” in 1965. In 1959, President Eisenhower signed a proclamation admitting Alaska to the U.S. as our 49th state. A moose was sighted this morning near the Rector and Flat Rock Road. This is the first report in months.

  • THURSDAY, JANUARY 4: It was this morning in 1981 when the temperature dropped to 31 degrees below zero at the Jackson Hill Weather Station with 19 inches of snow on the ground, and Old Forge slid down to minus 42 degrees. Today, Don and Bonnie Colton of Lowville celebrate their 55th anniversary, with love from their seven children and families. Milton and Helen Williamson of Constableville celebrated their 53rd anniversary on January 2, with best wishes from his seven sisters and two brothers, and family. In 1950, RCA Victor announced they would start producing long-playing 33 1/3 albums. Columbia Records started the trend two years earlier. The first Packard Caribbean automobiles with V-8 engines were introduced today in 1955. In 1996, General Motors announced they would put on the market next fall an electric car, named the EV-1. Country music singer Patti Loveless was born 50 years ago in Pikeville, Kentucky, and Deana Carter was born in Nashville in 1966.

  • FRIDAY, JANUARY 5: Happy 44th anniversary wishes to Myles and Roxy Higby of Mohawk Hill, from family and friends. We find another day with no snow. Checking my weather records, there was no snow in the village in 2005, 2000, 1997, and 1993. There was a huge snowfall starting on yesterday’s date in 1988 with 15 inches measured this morning and 21 inches on tomorrow’s date. Highmarket collected 69.4 inches of snow those two days. Walter Chrysler built his first Chrysler built Maxwell car in 1924, renaming the company Chrysler Corporation in 1925. Sonny Bono, one-time pop star and later a politician, was killed in a skiing accident in 1998 at South Lake Tahoe, California, at the age of 62. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Buddy Holly’s last song was released today in 1959. The song, “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore,” was written by Paul Anka. Buddy was killed in a plane crash on February 3, 1959, along with Ritchie Valens and the “Big Bopper.”

  • SATURDAY, JANUARY 6: Mildred Reape of Lanphear Street, Lowville, celebrates her 104th birthday today, with best wishes from son Harold, Nelly and Cathy. Happy 85th birthday to Harold Glouse Sr. of Boonville from all his family.
