George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 16th, 2012:
- MONDAY, JANUARY 16: Wow, what a
cold weekend. The temperature dropped to minus 18 degrees in the
village and here at the station. Highmarket had a minus 25 degree
temperature on Sunday morning. At 2:15 a.m. this morning, minus 15 was
the low in the village, minus 16 at the radio station, and minus 22 in
Highmarket. The lowest official temperature for Boonville on this day
was minus 27 in 1994. On the other hand, a high temperature of 55 was
enjoyed in 1995 and all snow melted away. There were three days in the
50s that week.
Skiers on the BREIA Egypt Road trail on Saturday were surprised to see
a female moose next to the trail.
- TUESDAY, JANUARY 17: He is
credited with being a prime developer of something that is used
worldwide. Thomas Crapper was an early developer of a flush toilet
mechanism and died on this day in 1910. He was born sometime in 1837
in Thorpe, Yorkshire, England.
Actress Betty White, a native of Oak Park, Illinois, celebrates her
90th birthday today.
The very first prototype Chevrolet Corvette made its first appearance
at the G.M. Autorama in New York City in 1953 and is still produced
today. Historically, the 1.5-millionth Corvette came off the assembly
line in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 2009.
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18: A
fast-moving cold front entered the North Country last evening. I
measured a wind gust of 37 mph in the village last evening at 10:34
p.m. Here at the radio station a wind gust of 41 mph arrived at 4:06
a.m. and up on the Rector Road, west of Martinsburg, a 67 mph west
wind gust arrived at 12:07 a.m.
Friday, the 13th, wasn’t lucky for country-singer Jake Owen, who
appeared at the Lewis County Fair a couple of years ago. He was
snowboarding Friday in Crested Butte, Colorado, when he ran into a
block of ice and suffered multiple fractures to his collarbone.
Crested Butte is a former mining town, located 231 miles southwest of
Denver, with a population of 1,550, and offers incredible skiing. My
wife Laurie, son Chris and I stayed overnight there two years ago. We
arrived with green grass and by morning our vehicle had 14 inches of
snow sitting on it, with 18 inches on the mountaintop near the
village.
- THURSDAY, JANUARY 19: I
received a call to wish Boonville triplets, James, Michael and Faith
Weaver happy 6th birthdays from Aunt Amanda, Uncle Jack, and Tucker.
Celebrity birthdays today include TV’s Archie Bunker’s wife, Jean
Stapleton, a native of New York City, is 89. Actor Desi Arnaz Jr. was
born in Los Angeles, CA, in 1959. The “one and only” Dolly Parton was
born in Sevier County, TN, 66 years ago and appeared at the
Boonville-Oneida County Fair in 1974 and in 1975. Country singer Phil
Everly of the Everly Brothers, a native of Brownie, Kentucky, is 73
today. He and his brother Don performed a great show at Turning Stone
Casino several years ago, which I enjoyed very much, as I grew up
during their peak of popularity and knew every song.
- FRIDAY, JANUARY 20: The Village
of Boonville received a substantial amount of snow last evening. This
morning, I measured 8-1/2 inches of new snow at 4:10 a.m. and it was
still snowing as I left for the radio station. In the open field
behind the station, I found 9-1/2 inches of snow on the ground and
there was a blue sky by 8 a.m. This was the most new snow since
January 14 of this year when I measured 6 inches in the village.
