George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of July 5th, 2010:

  • MONDAY, JULY 5: HOLIDAY

  • TUESDAY, JULY 6: Congratulations to Ed Mihalko and Denise DeVoe on the birth at 5 p.m. yesterday of a son. Andrew Douglas entered the world at 6 pounds, 13 ounces, and 21 inches in length. Happy wishes from their families and friends.

The cannon in the Little Village Park was last fired on this day in 1957 in celebration of Harley and Jean Gleasman’s wedding reception across the street at the Hulbert House. The cannon was plugged to prevent any future firings.

One of the largest hail stones was measured at Potter, Nebraska, in 1928. This stone was 5.5 inches in diameter, a circumference of 17 inches, and weighed 1.5 pounds.

  • WEDNESDAY, JULY 7: Corey and Jeannie Zeigler of Boonville called to wish each other a happy 31st anniversary, and I also received a card from mom Zeigler.

This week’s heat wave with temperatures in the high 80s to low 90s has been tough to deal with because of the humidity. Last year the temperatures remained in the 60s and rain was measured eight out of the first10 days of July.

  • THURSDAY, JULY 8: Happy 54th anniversary wishes to Mike and Rose Williamson of Boonville from their family and friends.

Husband Bob called to wish his wife ‘Shorty’ Kenyon a happy 32nd anniversary. They live on the Spencer Road out of Boonville.

A former resident of Boon Street in Boonville, Minnie Jones, now living in Verona, can celebrate her 98th birthday with congratulations from John and Mary Karlen of Blossvale.

Another sweltering day arrived yesterday with a high temperature of 88 degrees at the weather station. It was this day in 1988 when Boonville’s highest temperature of 94 was recorded. There were several 91-degree readings that week. This month has been dry since July 1.

  • FRIDAY, JULY 9: Congratulations to John and Sarah Scouten of Port Leyden on the birth yesterday morning of a son. Tristan James arrived weighing 6 pounds, 9 ounces. Happy wishes from both families.

Richard Davies has a reason to celebrate today. Formerly of Remsen, and now a resident of Sunset Nursing Home, he reaches his 103rd birthday with happy wishes from his family.

Happy 84th birthday wishes to Ann Mooney of Boonville from Ada and the family.
